ie7 hanging on startup

hi
whenever I start internet explorer and try to connect a website it just hangs for 20 seconds or so with "waiting for http:..." in the status bar. while this is going on i check the task manager and it says "not responding" for internet explorer. after 20 seconds everythings fine. but if i open a new window and try to connect the same thing happens. it has no trouble connecting to sites through links, but hangs whenever i type a new site or select one from favorites. i've tried the following so far:

-resetting ie
-deleting browser helper objects
-disabling add-ons
-using the internet explorer(no add-ons) from system tools

btw I only use the windows firewall and AVG free

Re: ie7 hanging on startup

Hi maxstone. . .

Welcome back to the Tech Support Forum - IE Support!

The first thing to try is click on START, then type Int Exp into the start search box; then right-click on IE above and answer the User Access Control (UAC) prompt. Does launching IE in this manner seem faster? You also could try to boot-up into SAFEMODE w/Networking and see if IE7 loads faster there, too. Have you tried your Internet connection with an alternate browser such as Firefox?

If either scenario is true, it means that a 3rd party software package is interfering with IE7 - most likely an anti-virus type product. Check this out with MSCONFIG - look under both the start-up and services tabs. Good Luck to you.

Regards. . .

  • Go to the extracted files
  • Double click on Toolbarcop.exe
  • Click on the notepad symbol:

Re: ie7 hanging on startup

ok i'm also using firefox which runs just fine. loads any website immediately with no problem. so it's probably not an ISP or network related issue. As to the search box thing: I dont have a search box on the start menu. I have the regular search application which finds the internet explorer folder and .exe when i type in Int Exp. Altho when i right-click .exe i dont get User Access Control prompt.

My System

Re: ie7 hanging on startup

Hi maxstone. . .

My apologies for the confusion... it is on my part as I was referring to Vista for some reason. Your system - XP Pro SP2 - is clearly stated.

Ok then... how about SAFEMODE w/Networking? Can you bring IE7 up there OK?

Also. . . does this problem span across different user accounts in normal start-up windows (including the Guest account)?

I see that you are using AVG v8 anti-virus. What were you using prior to AVG8? What firewall do you have?

Regards. . .

Re: ie7 hanging on startup

I tried both the safe mode with networking and the guest account, and it worked just fine on both. before AVG 8 free i was using AVG 7 free. i'm also using the windows firewall and haven't used anything but these two for some time now. altho the start of the problem and the transition from AVG 7 to 8 might be coinciding, tho im not so sure.

My System

Re: ie7 hanging on startup

Hi maxstone. . .

I'd like for you to logon to the problematic user account and download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop, found HERE. Then double-click on dss.exe - it will ask you for the location of HiJackThis - tell it to go out to the Internet and find it. When dss is finished in a minute or two, a Notepad will appear with a file name of main.txt - save it as a text file. Then minimized will be another report - extra.txt - save it as a text file as well.

Now... boot into SAFEMODE w/Networking. Repeat the above step. However, save the two files with a different name - add the word SAFE to the filename - or something else distinctive so that I will know which ones are which.

Then attach all four to your next post - hopefully some program that is interfering with IE7 will give itself away.

Thank you.

Regards. . .

Re: ie7 hanging on startup

I ran DSS and got two main.exe files, one in normal mode and one in safe mode. but it gave the extra.txt only once and that was the first time i ran the program (a day before i did the normal mode+safe mode scans). So I've attached those three files. Btw thanks for your help dude.
Attached Files
File Type: txt main.txt (17.3 KB, 1 views)
File Type: txt main-safe.txt (16.6 KB, 0 views)
File Type: txt extra.txt (23.2 KB, 2 views)
