[SOLVED] IE7 problems

I am experiencing a similar, but more complex, problem as a consistent user of IE7.
My MAIN system (Win XP SP2, 1 GB RAM, 2.4 GHz) encountered an IE7 failure to open. At about the same time, NIS 2007 also failed to open (Error 8500, 108). I am not aware of any updates, or new downloads, other than the standard daily automatic update for NIS 2007 that were processed around the time of the failures. My system comprises NIS 2007, SpyBot v1.5.2, Network Magic v4.7, XoftSpySE v4.33, RegCure v1.4.0.4, McAfee SpamKiller v4.0.47.1. Registry Mechanic v70, System Mechanic 6, Zone Lab Pro 7.5, and, Spyware Blaster 3.5.1, Although IE7 displayed only “cannot open this page”, OUTLOOK 2003 was able to open the COGECO website for email. Network Magic indicated no Internet connectivity, despite the obvious correct functioning of the Cable modem and Linksys WAPR sub-system. I have been able to use IE7 from my ACER Laptop, and IE 6 from my Win ME-based computer, both of which are part of my home wireless network. Also, in OUTLOOK on my MAIN system, the option for MS WORD as the editor for forwards and new e-mails, does not function, reverting to the OUTLOOK-based editor. I did perform an uninstall and re-install of IE7, but that did not resolve the problem.
Given the malfunctioning NIS 2007, I have downloaded AVG v8.0 as an interim measure of protection.
I downloaded and installed IE7 Security Update (KB928089) via my laptop with transfer to my MAIN system. Regrettably, the update did NOT resolve the problem with either IE7 or NIS 2007.
This may not provide the requisite amount of information, but I would be most grateful for any assistance and/or guidance. Appreciatively, Bruce

Re: IE7 problems

Hi Go To Power: I can only access my Cogeco ISP via Outlook. Since my last post, I have opened Safe Mode with Networking, and connected to the Internet successfully (i.e. IE7 opened successfully). Regrettably, apparently Safe Mode precludes updates from Microsoft and AVG and NIS, because I could not update any of my programs while in Safe Mode. Each of the relevant website displayed an error message to the effect that updating was not technically possible. I have run every anti-malware program available to me, but nothing seems to have resolved the IE7 failure to open. I also could not install Ad Aware 2007 on my MAIN system, although it did install correctly on my laptop. I also have downloaded to my laptop NIS081550.exe from Symantec/Norton's website. I ran it on my laptop to provide an upgrade to NIS 2008. I transferred the downloaded file to my MAIN system, via a USD memory stick, but when I ran the file, the NIS Set-up operation has been on continuously for 14 hours, and is still running! I hadalso uninstalled the AVG 8.0 program that I had been using while NIS 2007 was inoper ative (error 8500, 108), as a prerequiasite to the NIS 2008 upgrade installation. I also note that, contrary to my statement in my last post, Networtk Magic now shows the connecction to the Internet as ON (connected). I have noted some other strange occurences on my MAIN system. For example, my Cogeco Webmail, accessed on IE7 on my laptop, shows many emails as NEW (unread), despite the fact that I have opened them in Outlook on my MAIN system. Also, my McAfee SpamKiller is repeating many emails (as SPAM) despite me having handled them in a prior session. I hope that someone can resolve the NIS update install problem, such that maybe NIS 2008 (as it works well on my laptop) will resolve the IE7 problem. Appreciatively, Bruce

Re: IE7 problems

HI Bruce,

Try uninstalling Norton to see if that works.

Also what are all your security programs you have used/installed on your computer?

Re: IE7 problems

Hi again Go To Power:
After many attempts to resolve the problem of both IE7 and NIS 2007 not opening on my MAIN desktop system, I finally resolved the problems by a convoluted sequence of corrective measures. This included, but was not limited to, using anti-malware programs Ad-Aware 2007, SpyBot v1.5.2, and, HiJackThis v 2.0.2. I did not uninstall either NIS 2007 product before upgrading from the Norton Support website. I used the NIS upgrade NIS081550.exe download to upgrade each of my NIS 2007 products (purchased in Dec 06, with subscriptions updated once each). While my IE7 was inoperative on my MAIN system, I used a USB memory stick to transfer the relevant executable files downloaded to my laptop to the MAIN sysem. I used some updates to my Network Magic v4.7.8023.0 on each system (it will only be retained on my MAIN desktop system). However, my NIS 2008 subscription problem remains outstanding: The MAIN system shows zero (0) days remaining, i.e. subscription requires renewal, whereas my laptop system shos 610 days remaining (my renewal in Dec 07 was only for one year). I am still seeking resolution of this anomoly with Symantec/Norton Tech Support staff. Hopefully, they will override the current erroneous MY Account information to correct the subscription status to the correct the split between the two NIS 2008 products on my systems. I also have Norton system Works 2008 on my laptop system, but that appears to be functioning correctly (although I had a dreadful time upgrading from my previous NSW 2003 product installation.
I will provide this updated status to the Tech Support Forum webpage.
Appreciatively,
Bruce (Arbyem)
