I'm on my parents computer, they're having a problem that if you leave the computer for more than 2 minutes and Internet Explorer Error pops up. It's Windows 98 OS. Internet Explorer 6. Here's what I got of the message:
"EXPLORER caused an exception 6d007fH in module WEBCHECK.DLL at 0177:78b32599." Last edited by Bent137; 10-22-2004 at 10:34 AM. Reason: Spelling |

I want to make sure it's not spyware causing this problem.
Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Okay, here's my log. Before I paste one quick bit of info you may find helpful. I DID download Webshots(Screensaver thingy) on purpose, but I DID NOT download weather bug on purpose, and frankly, would like it gone. But I shall wait until you have finished your advice.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked. Make sure to close any open browsers. Go into HijackThis->Config->Misc. Tools->Open process manager. Select the following and click Kill process for each one if they are still listed (they shouldn't be - but double check it): C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IEDRIVER\IEDRIVER.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PCS\PCSVC.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI\DPI.EXE C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\UPDMGR\UPDMGR.EXE Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: IncrediFind WeatherBug WhenUSearch WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\sb.htm R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file) O2 - BHO: (no name) - {01C5BF6C-E699-4CD7-BEA1-786FA05C83AB} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\SYSAI\APROPOSPLUGIN.DLL (file missing) O2 - BHO: NavErrRedir Class - {0199DF25-9820-4bd5-9FEE-5A765AB4371E} - C:\PROGRA~1\INCRED~2\BHO\INCFIN~1.DLL O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Power Scan] C:\Program Files\Power Scan\powerscan.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IEDriver] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\IEDriver\IEDriver.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WhenUSearch] C:\Program Files\WhenUSearch\Search.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoUpdater] "c:\Program Files\AutoUpdate\AutoUpdate.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Pcsv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\pcs\pcsvc.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Dpi] C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\DPI\DPI.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [updmgr] C:\Program Files\Common files\updmgr\updmgr.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\WILDTA~1\APPS\CDA\CDAENG~1.DLL,cdaEngi neMain O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [52905b35799d] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CTL3D346.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\PROGRAM FILES\AWS\WEATHERBUG\WEATHER.EXE 1 O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {4528BBE0-4E08-11D5-AD55-00010333D0AD} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\YAHOO!\MESSENGER\YHEXBMES0411.DLL (file missing) O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Yahoo! Your log is clean. Now to the error problem.
Go to this site and download the webcheck.dll fle. Unzip it and then go search for your older webcheck.dll file. Rename it to something like webcheck.old and copy/move that one you downloaded into that same folder. See if that fixes the problem. If not, go to this Microsoft Article since it addresses the issue.

I tried downloading the webcheck.dll file, but that didn't work. Then I looked at the article but I don't know if that will help since it's about IE5 and I have IE6. and everything I've seen about IE6 has referenced Windows XP, but I have Windows 98. Maybe that's the problem? Maybe I should actually have IE5 on this computer? I just know that I don't have a CD with the files on it, and I didn't save it to my computer when I upgraded, so I can't reinstall the files like that article says, which is also kinda stupid because if the files are faulty in the first place then wouldn't you just be reinstalling faulty files?

Let's try the downgrade method then.

It worked, but it downgraded to 4.0 which was what came with the computer I guess. Is there someplace I can go to upgrade to 5.5? After all, upgrading to 6.1 was what got me in this trouble in the first place.

Well, when I downloaded that, it worked kind of. But it wouldn't let me type in IE. Like posting here, or searching on Yahoo. Then I found a version of IE 6 with Yahoo integrated and I downloaded it and it seems to be working. If I have a problem I'll pop back in. Thanks!
