my friend sent me a link to some stupid games site that seemed to install a load of spyware onto my system. i downloaded and ran spybot and adaware to get rid of it all.. and i'm pretty sure that i did, but since then i've had real problems browsing. - I'd say three-quarters of the pages i try to load come up with the 'The page cannot be displayed' page and know amount of refreshing will make them work. actually, i used to get that error page before i contracted the spyware - but not nearly to the same extent i have it now.
it's not always the same pages that fail to work, sometimes my homepage, google loads and sometimes it doesn't. sometimes, if clicking a link fails to work in that window, right clicking and selecting 'open in a new window' will make it work. i carried out a full virus scan which found nothing and i've tried downloading different browsers. Firefox gave me a different error message for most pages and opera says 'could not locate remote server' to every request. I've also tried using system restore to go back to when i didn't have so much of a problem, as well as unplugging my connection, waiting, reconnecting and then restarting a whole bunch of times... but to no avail. I am on a high-speed network at my university halls of residence - could it be my connection setup? is it something i have to contact my network administrator about or is there some way i can fix this myself? I'm on XP home, running IE 6. thanks for reading. |

Please download HijackThis. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Run a scan and save the log file. Post the whole log file here. Do not fix anything since most of them listed there are harmless (some are system required). This program will help us determine if there is any spyware/malware on your computer.

Hi olivr......let's see what we can see.....
Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below. Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a new restore point. Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). [/b]Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist: Win Get WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. If you installed this yourself and want to keep it, you may ignore all the fixes regarding it. Otherwise, uninstall it and follow all the fixes below for it. Check and fix the following in HijackThis if they still exist (make sure not to miss any): F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe, O2 - BHO: - {371C6960-302C-45D0-9504-50B820247439} - G:\programs\win get\WinIE.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WildTangent CDA] RUNDLL32.exe "C:\Program Files\WildTangent\Apps\CDA\cdaEngine0400.dll",cdaEngineMain O16 - DPF: {AB29A544-D6B4-4E36-A1F8-D3E34FC7B00A} (WTHoster Class) - http://www.wildtangent.com/install/...acom/wtinst.cab Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist: C:\Windows\System32\wsaupdater.exe G:\programs\win get\ C:\Program Files\WildTangent\ Reboot into Normal Mode and post a new HijackThis log file so we can make sure it's clean.

thankyou for the excellent instructions!
i wasn't able to remove wildtangent or winget -- i got an error message that said that the windows installer was not accessible... perhaps, it suggested, because i was in safe mode. i removed them succesfully after i rebooted -- i can't tell if it has worked yet. here's my new hi-jack-this log: Scan saved at 16:20:15, on 18/10/2004 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Stardock\SDMCP.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\navapw32.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\video\quicktime\qttask.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\RUNDLL32.EXE C:\PROGRA~1\ntl\BROADB~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\eBayTBar.exe C:\internet\ZoneAlarm\zonealarm.exe C:\Program Files\ntl\broadband medic\bin\mpbtn.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\EPSON\EBAPI\SAgent2.exe c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\navapsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZoneLabs\vsmon.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\msiexec.exe C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.google.co.uk/ R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://uk5.hpwis.com/ O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com O2 - BHO: eBay Helper Object - {001F2570-5DF5-11d3-B991-00A0C9BB0874} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\eBayBand.dll O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 5.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.ocx O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll O2 - BHO: CNavExtBho Class - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - c:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdxm.ocx O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\program files\google\googletoolbar1.dll O3 - Toolbar: eBay Toolbar - {46AE04C0-BCFA-4728-90E7-00EB4A8B3863} - C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\eBayBand.dll O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpsysdrv] c:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dla] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswctrl.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\System32\igfxtray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NAV Agent] c:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\navapw32.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PS2] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ps2.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\video\quicktime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\System32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CloneCDTray] "G:\programs\clonecd\CloneCDTray.exe" /s O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NeroFilterCheck] C:\WINDOWS\system32\NeroCheck.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\ntl\BROADB~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Cvrt] mscvrt32.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe O4 - Global Startup: broadband medic.lnk = C:\Program Files\ntl\broadband medic\bin\matcli.exe O4 - Global Startup: eBay Toolbar.LNK = ? thankyou CTSNKY.
well, it seemed to be working better last night, but this morning the problem is as bad as it was again. this is what usually happens. if i were to enter: http://www.hotmail.com/ into the address bar i would get either the 'page cannot be displayed' page or the 'internet explorer could not open the search page' message. i'd keep opening new windows and doing the same thing until it worked, which would take 5 or 6 attempts. |

Give us a fresh HJT log and also one from StartDreck.
Download: StartDreck. Unzip to its own folder and start the program: Press 'Config' Press 'Unmark All' Check the following boxes only: Registry -> Run Keys System/drivers> Running processes Press 'Ok' Press 'Save' and select the location to save the log file (default is the same folder as the application) Post the log in this thread. ========= Also, boot into Safe Mode and delete this folder: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Stardock\ I will assume this is the game you were talking about in first post.

Hi olivr,
Well, I did not detail any fixes for these entries, but they may be causing some of your problems. Do you know/use this Math Player program? O18 - Filter: application/xhtml+xml - {32F66A26-7614-11D4-BD11-00104BD3F987} - C:\Program Files\Design Science\MathPlayer\MathMLMimer.dll O18 - Filter hijack: text/xml - {32F66A26-7614-11D4-BD11-00104BD3F987} - C:\Program Files\Design Science\MathPlayer\MathMLMimer.dll O18 - Filter: text/xml; charset=iso-8859-1 - {32F66A26-7614-11D4-BD11-00104BD3F987} - C:\Program Files\Design Science\MathPlayer\MathMLMimer.dll O18 - Filter: text/xml; charset=utf-8 - {32F66A26-7614-11D4-BD11-00104BD3F987} - C:\Program Files\Design Science\MathPlayer\MathMLMimer.dll Also, this entry in StartDreck is a bit suspicious: Suite=regedit -s c:\windows\temp\adj_hp.reg Go in via Safe Mode and delete all of the files located in the C:\Windows\Temp folder (not folder itself). Make sure the hidden files are still "turned on" as discussed in first response. Reboot to Normal mode and give us a new StartDreck log. If this entry re-appears, I will ask my colleagues to lend a fresh set of eyes.

done and done. i have no idea what math player was, but i've gotten rid of it now and so should be clean. : ) as for my browser problem, i'm pretty sure it was dns cacheing of unsuccesful browsing look-ups. for those of you who might be experiencing the same thing, this is a very helpful page...
http://cable-dsl.home.att.net/dns_cache.htm it has an edit to the registry that i downloaded and executed and, so far, it seems to be working ok. thankyou very much for your time, CTSNKY. |
