Norton LiveUpdate cannot find internet connection
I am using Norton System Works 2002 on a Windows XP Pro system (with the SP2 update). I just installed this program on this computer but LiveUpdate keeps saying it cannot find internet connection. I have chosen "use the internet options in the Control Panel", and even tried disabling the firewall. Nothing works.
This same program works fine on my Windows XP Home even with the firewall. Any help? |

Latest attempt to fix LiveUpdate "no connection"
I have installed the latest Live Update with no positive results.
I waited until I could install Norton Internet Security 2004 to see if I could get more control over Firewalls, Intruder Detection, etc and thinking that such a smart program (sarcasm) would be able to find out why it couldn't connect to the internet. Same problem: Unable to connect to internet. Any ideas anyone? |

Found the solution to LiveUpdate failure
I found a solution to the problem at
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...is&svy=&csm=no Maybe that link is WAY too long to open, but the specific step that worked for me was to delete the LiveUpdate files: Deleting the Settings.LiveUpdate files Situation: This document shows you how to delete the Settings.LiveUpdate files and change LiveUpdate from Express mode to Interactive Mode. Solution: Some of the LiveUpdate settings are in the Settings.LiveUpdate file. Each time that you run LiveUpdate, a new Settings.LiveUpdate file is created. You can recognize the old Settings files by the number that is added to the front of their file names. If the Settings.LiveUpdate files are corrupted, LiveUpdate may not run correctly. To fix this, you need to delete all copies of the Settings.LiveUpdate file. This may include files that have names such as 1.Settings.LiveUpdate, 2.Settings.LiveUpdate, and so on. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: When you delete these files, the next time that you run LiveUpdate, it will run in Express Mode. We strongly recommend that you change LiveUpdate to run in Interactive Mode because this mode displays some errors with more details. Step 2 shows you how to do this. If you arrived at this document by clicking a link in another document, then when you finish here, click the Back button on your Web browser to return to the first document. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Step 1: Delete the Settings.LiveUpdate files Follow the steps for your version of Windows. To delete the Settings.LiveUpdate files in Windows 98/Me/2000 On the Windows desktop, double-click the My Computer icon. Do one of the following: In Windows 98, on the View menu, click Options. In Windows Me/2000, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options. On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types. Do one of the following: In Windows 98, in the Advanced settings box, under the Hidden files folder, click Show all files. In Windows Me/2000, under the Hidden files folder, uncheck Hide protected operating system files, and click Show hidden files and folders. If you see a warning message, click Yes. Click Apply. Click OK. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Find (or Search) > Files or Folders. In the Search Results window, set "Look in" to (C:). Check Include subfolders. In the Named or Search for... box, type--or copy and paste--the following: *SETTINGS.LIVEUPDATE Click Find Now or Search Now. When the files are found, on the Edit menu, click Select All. The files that are found and selected should look similar to this picture: On your keyboard, press Delete. If you are asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes. To delete the Settings.LiveUpdate files in Windows XP On the Windows taskbar, click Start > My Computer. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options. On the View tab, under Files and Folders folder, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types. Uncheck Hide protected operating system files. Under "Hidden files and folders" folder, click Show hidden files and folders. If you see a warning message, click Yes. Click Apply. Click OK. Click Start > Search. Click All files and folders. In the "All or part of the file name" box, type--or copy and paste--the following: *SETTINGS.LIVEUPDATE Verify that "Look in" is set to Local Hard Drives or to (C:). Click More advanced options. Check Search system folders. Check Search subfolders. Check Search hidden files and folders. Click Search. When the files are found, on the Edit menu, click Select All. The files that are found and selected should look similar to this picture: On your keyboard, press Delete. If you are asked to confirm the deletion, click Yes. Hope this helps someone else! |
