IE 6 Freezes

I'm using Windows 98 Second Edition. Whenever I use IE6 it freezes on every website. I had to change my browser to Fırefox. Firefox does not freeze, but I like IE6 better though. I don't know if it will solve the freezing problem to reinstall the IE6 or not. Not totatlly happy with firefox, the only thing I like firefox is it does not freeze. I tried netscape did not like. I tried opera did not like either.

DO you have any add-ons for IE6?

Re: IE 6 Freezes

try this:

Open IE and go to Tools => Internet Options => Advanced and uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions" (requires restart). Try opening links after you rebooted and let us know if you still have a problem.

Re: IE 6 Freezes

Oh the problem isn't fixed yet .

This means an add-on was making it freeze.

try disabling the add-ons one by one, (restart IE, between each disable).

Disable a add on Internet Explore 7
  • Open Internet Explorer.
  • Click the Tools button, click Manage Add-ons, and then click Disable Add-ons.
  • Click the add-on you want to disable, click Disable, and then click OK.

Re: IE 6 Freezes

Remember I don't have Win XP. I have Win 98SE, and under tools I have choices as: Mail and News, Syncronize, Windows Update, Show related Links and Internet Options. No add-ons options on my IE6 at all.

Re: IE 6 Freezes

Hi sensitive, Welcome to TSF!

You will need to go into "Internet Options" > Programs > Managed Add-ons.

See if this works.

Kind Regards,

Re: IE 6 Freezes

Hi sensitive,

Go to Add/Remove Programs. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 Sp1 and Internet Tools. Click Add/Remove button, then put a tick in the Repair Internet Explorer, click ok.

If that does not help, Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc
This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem.
In all likelihood you will be prompted to insert the Windows 98 CD.

I have done the repair thing already did not help there. I just did the sfc and its done. What do I do after that? I still don't have add-ons on my Windows 98 SE.

Why are you worried about add-ons?

That does not exist in IE6

The only thing I can offer is a Repair Install at this point. With Win98 booted, place the Win98 cd in the drive and proceed to install overtop itself. After reboot, visit Windows Update Site (yes, you will get the updates)

Geekgirl,

Should I leave the thrird-party browser extensions (requires restart) unchecked? After I unchecked that I had no problems. I still did the sfc thing though.

Re: IE 6 Freezes

If you want them disabled then yes. They do cause issues in some systems.

Re: IE 6 Freezes

Try uninstalling then reinstalling IE6. Make sure you have the .exe on your desktop before removing via Add/Remove.

I want to see what is all installed on your system, Open up HiJackThis and go to Config->Misc Tools and check the first two boxes there. Now click on the 'Generate StartupList log' button. Post that log in your next post.
