KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

I'm getting KB939653 in sys tray for MS Updates, but when I check out what it's for, Microsoft says it's for Vista. I run XP SP2 (fully updated). Why does it say I need this. When it scans my system doesn't MS Updates distinguish what OS I'm running? How can I get rid of the nagging sys tray shield? Thanks for any input.

Have you tried to let MS just update and install it?

It should be able to determine what OS you are running.

Thanks for the reply Power. I installed it and all seems okay. I still don't understand why they send out a supposed Vista only update to XP users.

Re: KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

I am not sure if it is for vista. As in this link here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

They are saying the update is for IE6, and IE6 doesn't work in Vista, but then again you have IE7.......

That is strange that MS would do that.

Re: KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

Amen!!!!!!!!

I noticed you also use PCLinux. I tried out Ubuntu on live CD but I've been using Windows since 3.1 and a bit addicted to it I guess. I have a little DOS command line experience but I read and hear that Linux takes a lot to get configured and has a lot of command line entry that has to be done. I'm not sure I could dual boot Linux and Windows anyway because I use FD-ISR imaging software and it has it's own boot screen. I couldn't do without imaging software...saved my bacon too many times when Windows has gone belly up for some of those "confusing" reasons. This probably isn't the thread for this so I'll sign out of here and catch you on another.

Thanks for your input.

Re: KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

It doesn't really matter if you Hijack your own thread .

I will just give my opinon on PClinuxOS it is very good easy to use. I haven't figured out how to install programs from using a command line. But there is a program on linux which all you do is type in the name of a program you want, if the program is in the database it will download the installation files and install it for you. I like PCLinux but I am used to Windows.

I didnt like Ubuntu.

Re: KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

Is PCLinux a freebie, downloading an ISO image? I went to their website and McAfee SiteAvisor tagged it as a cautionary site so I got off of it. I'm still not certain what affect it would have on my FD-ISR boot situation.

Thanks,
That's a clean site. I'll check into it when I get a chance to get more info at Wilder's on the FD-ISR forum about dual booting another OS.

If you ask in the hardware sections or Linux sections they will be able to offer very good advise, on the topic.

Yea it is a big download. It can be ran as a liveCD, so you can try it out first.

Re: KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

That's cool. Ubuntu puts their live CD and install program on seperate CD's when they ship them to you. I guess that's why the download is so large. I am assuming you are given the choice of live CD or install at boot up? Do any security programs come on the live CD, such as firewall and anti-virus?

Re: KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

No there is not a firewall or Anti-virus with the liveCD (i dont think), but you dont really need one for Linux. When you install it you then can install a Firewall and Antivirus.

To install you run the Live CD, once the desktop is loaded there is an Icon called Install just double click on that.

This confuses me a little so please be patient with me.

"To install you run the Live CD, once the desktop is loaded there is an Icon called Install just double click on that."

I don't want to install it on my HDD, just run it from the CD like Ubuntu does. With Ubuntu Live CD I just had to pop in the CD and re-boot.

Re: KB939653 IE7-Do I need it?

Sorry some times I am not very good with explain things.
  • Burn the ISO to disk
  • Put the disc in your CD/DVD drive
  • Restart your computer
  • It will now boot of the linux disc.
  • Linux will ask you some questions and also some configuration to use the Internet.
  • Once that is done the Linux desktop will load up
  • When the linux desktop appears, there is an icon called Install or something like that. If you want to install PCLinOS doubl click that icon.
