IE6 freezing up for after opening new window

hi,

My IE 6 is freezing and not responding after it is opened of late. I run McAfee full edition and it is not able to find anything neither Adware. My computer shows some other strange symptoms as well, like missing system tray icons. I am using IE6 and I am quite sure some program has crept into IE surreptitiously. Any help?
-Ron

Re: IE6 freezing up for after opening new window

Hello Ron and welcome to Tech Support Forum

What icons are missing from the system tray?

Do you think you are infected?

Try and upgrade to IE7.

Re: IE6 freezing up for after opening new window

Hi Go The Power,

You guys are doing an awesome job through this forum and hope you will be able to help in my issue as well.

I am not sure if I am infected or not as McAfee full edition and Ad-Aware is installed on the machine, and their scan results are not nothing to be alarmed of. But there are some very disturbing symptoms-
1) I used to have Yahoo messenger, Googletalk and Dell Wireless utility icons in my system tray, those are missing now.
2) Yahoo messenger & Googletalk won't start even from the Start->All Programs
3) IE6 freezes as soon as a window is opened. My homepage is blank, and while it is in hung state, I cannot even close it by right-clicking it. But after allowing it some time it is ok. If I want to open another window again the same thing.

I am attaching the startuplist.exe files. Hope that will assist you in nailing down the issue. I don't want to upgrade to IE7 as I was pretty happy with IE6. Other browsers like Firefox and Netscape are working fine.

Thanks
Ron

Hello Ron

What is your homepage set too?

Does IE run fine with these instructions:

Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System tools and click on Internet Explore (No Addons)

Re: IE6 freezing up for after opening new window

It is set to about:blank.

There is no such option to start IE without add-ons on my machine.
Can't remember if it was there in the past and it disappeared now or was not there from the beginning.

Click Start => Control panel => Internet options, highlight about:blank and press Del on your keyboard, now type in www.google.com press apply and ok.

No response, IE doesn't open.
Is that what was expected?

Re: IE6 freezing up for after opening new window

I was hoping it would help.

This could be Malware infection...

I would recommend that you go here; read and follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, to here. (Just click on the coloured links.)

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good luck

Please also remember DO NOT post your logs in this thread, please start a new thread here. (Just click on the coloured link.) and post the logs.

Kind regards,
Go The Power

Re: IE6 freezing up after opening new window

yes I think so too.. IE has been corrupted by a spyware/malware.
But any clue why the icons disappeared from the system tray and why the programs in questions (yahoo messenger, gtalk etc) won't start at all?
Is there one issue that is causing all these or two issues?

By the way, I ran the Windows malicious removal tool and it has found one infection Backdoor:Win32/Zonebac.gen!B

Thanks for looking into my issues!
Regards,
Ron

Re: IE6 freezing up for after opening new window

Sorry I am not sure why the icons are disappearing from the system tray.

If you have any problems or want to ask a question about the instruction's in post 8, feel free to ask. But it is important that you follow all the steps.

Good luck with getting your computer cleaned up.
