Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

Hi Go the Power,

To be honest not sure, what add-on are you referring to?

I do also have Mozilla Firefox on the computer but I wouldn't think that could cause IE 7 to freeze?

Would windows live be an add-on?

Regards,

Brobilly

Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

Hi Brobilly,

Firefox shouldn't cause IE to freeze, if you like Firefox I would recommend staying with it.

Here is a way to produce a few lists of IE addons:

Produce a list of IE add ons

  • Click Here to download StartUplist. Save it to your desktop.
  • Extract the files.
  • You should now have StartupList.exe double click on it.
  • Wait until it is complete.
  • Right click on Browser Helper Objects (BHO), click on Save Node and all sub nodes as.. then when the save box appears type in BHO.txt and click Save.
  • Now right click on ActiveX Objects, click on Save Node and all sub nodes as.. then when the save box appears type in ActiveX Objects.txt and click Save.
  • Then right click on Internet Explore toolbar, click on Save Node and all sub nodes as.. then when the save box appears type in IE toolbars.txt and click Save.
  • Last one, right click on Internet Explore buttons/tools, click on Save Node and all sub nodes as.. then when the save box appears type in IE buttons.txt and click Save.

Open up the folder where Startuplist.exe is stored and locate thes files, please post them in your next reply:
  • BHO.txt
  • ActiveX Objects.txt
  • IE toolbars.txt
  • IE buttons.txt

Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

Hi Go to Power,

I have attached the 4 items you requested

I do enjoy Firefox but I find that it has a few minor down-falls for example I write stuff on a website which has a text editor and firefox doesn't allow you to copy and paste

Many thanks

Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

Hello again

It is a shame Firefox doesnt work.

Before we start disabling add-ons lets make sure they are the problem, try running IE in safe mode:

Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System tools and click on Internet Explore (No Addons)

Lets see if it still freezes.

Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

Hi Go the Power,

Sorry for the delay, although I don't have internet access in safe mode it seems as if IE 7 works in safe mode ,it certainly doesn't freeze my computer when I open it and I can navigate through the different pull down menus which I can't do in normal mode

Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

My apologies for making you run startuplist twice, i forgot to check the whole thread to see if I already asked you do to so

Would you mind if we nuke all the add-ons for IE? and start fresh?

If you dont mind follow these steps:

Click Start, All programs, Accessories, System tools and click on Internet Explore (No Addons).

Click Tools => Internet Options, click on the tab Advanced then click the button Reset, then click Reset on the pop up box. Then click Close, then Ok. Close IE.

Try running IE now and see if it works.

Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

That is good to hear. Now we just need to re-apply the essentials that will keep your computer protected.

Update Java

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 u3.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications". (4th one down)
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Please go to the links below to update the following:

Hi Go the Power,

You are a star thank you very much for your excellent assistance

IE 7 is now working correctly

I notice the following in your replies
Free Antivirus: Avira Antivir -- A Guide to installation and use of AviraŽ AntiVir PE

I use AVG free version would you recommend a change or even to add Avira Antivir as a second virus checker

Many thanks again

Re: Help with IE 7 freeze

Hello Brobilly

No problems I am glad to have helped .I am glad to hear your problem is solved.

At the end of each of my reply that is my signature, so every time I posted it will automatically appear there.

AVG is a good Anti virus, I just prefer Avira. When you look at the free best antivirus AVG, Avira and Avast, they are all very good, it just comes down to personal choice of which one you fell comfortable with.

It isn't recommended to have more than one anti virus on a system at a time, as they cause conflicts and system instability.

Do you have Norton installed? or have you ever had Norton installed?

What firewall do you have?

Kind regards,
Go The Power

PS, see not all Port Supporters loose terribly
