IE 6.0 won't load web page
I've been working with the hard drive forum after my older Gateway computer crashed, and they've helped me install the drive, re-load the software, add SpyBot, etc. but now I have a problem with IE 6.0, where I can't get www.excite.com to open so I can check my email. I've been able to get other sites to come up, however, when I type in the address and hit go nothing happens (other than the text highlights in blue). I checked under Privacy and cookie handling and excite.com was listed. I checked allow (didn't help), and then deleted it (still didn't help). I tried lowering security to low (didn't work). Is there something else I should do? When I went out to the Microsoft web site, I saw that there is a IE 6.0 sp1 available which I haven't downloaded yet, but I'm not sure that it will help, since I can get other web sites to open. Any assistance you can provide will be appreciated!

Re: IE 6.0 won't load web page
Hi Cktrout5,
I am not a network guru, but I would download IE6 sp1 and see what happens. This should not have any ill effects on the OS and it will not only repair your IE6 (if thats the problem), but will give you better security and performance. I would also download all the Updates at the Microsoft Update site (if you have not done that already). What firewall and anti virus are you using? This may help the network guys out if they knew that. Let us know how you make out. Thanks, Bill |

Re: IE 6.0 won't load web page
I use AOL as my provider and rely on the firewall that they provide. Do you see that as a problem? I read that you shouldn't have more than one firewall or anti-virus program at a time as they sometime cause conflicts. I've loaded Symantec Anti-virus 10.1.5.5 and I'm current on all of the updates. I've also loaded all of the critical updates they listed on the MicroSoft Update area, however, because of the hard drive crash, I had to send away for a sp2 disc. I'm away from this computer until tonight, but after I try loading IE 6.0 sp1, I'll post if it solved my problem. Oh by the way, I also read another post about IE 6.0 running slowly and I've had the same experience. I too use dial-up and over the past several months, it has been extremely frustrating having to wait very long periods of time for pages to load (I realize it's dial-up, but I'm talking much slower than normal). I did an online chat with AOL support and they said I should try to do a Quick Restore on AOL but that did nothing to speed things up. Just thought I'd mention it in case it have something to do with my page loading problem.

Re: IE 6.0 won't load web page
Keep me posted on the IE6 sp1 download. you are correct on the firewall and virus protection. Be sure you have only one of each. The spybot search and destroy may also block you from this site if you inadvertently set it to block it. Check the settings of the firewall and spybot to be sure that this site is allowed.
Thanks, Bill |
