Question IE 6 "has encountered a problem..." When certain buttons pressed

Greeting foks. I'm a new user and this is my first post. I'm usually able to resolve problems without help. But this one has stumped me so thought I'd try here.

IE 6.0.2800.1106 (SP1), on Win 98se. All updates applied.

Browsing works fine unless certain buttons are pressed.

Search, Favorites, Media, History buttons cause crash in browseui.dll. Other buttons, Stop, Home, Refresh, Print, Email work with no problems

Link bar is empty and cannot drag URLs to link bar from address bar (though link bar had links before problem started). I can't pinpoint when this problem cropped up.

With "full screen" above buttons all work but still can't drag URLs to link bar. (don't want to use "full screen" all the time; it's anoying). Note: "Full Screen" is the option found under Views, not "Maximize" found when you right click on the window in the task bar. Problem with buttons still occurs when "Maximized".

Have searched Microsoft and the web. Have analyzed results of running Highjackthis, Antivir, spyware, and SFC scans. Have repaired IE 6, and reinstalled.

I suspect that this is a Windows problem rather than an IE problem related to XML processing. But have no problems with any other application.

Ideas would be appreciated.
