loss of internet after 5 minutes

I am working on a computer remotely that loses internet access. After the computer is restarted it has internet access for about 5 minutes and then it loses access, exept that my remote connection still works so the internet is still there. I can ping a website with both the ip address and the web address, but IE and Firefox can not find eather site. I have used spybot and ad aware and removed some spyware, but not a lot. Hijack this is now clean of anything unusuall. It is a windows xp service pack 2 machine. The antivirus and firewall program on the computer will not run. Thanks.
