Removing AOL for good
Hi,
I'm new to this site and joined to see if someone could tell me how to remove AOL from my neighbors computer. It's driving him crazy, making sounds and popping up all the time. Any advice is greatly appreciated. |

Try going in to the control panel and then into add/remove programs. Remove all of the AOL stuff.

Removing AOL for good
Thanks for your response bry623. I've done a little research and have found that the "add/remove programs" in Windows XP doesn't completely remove the problem and may cause even more trouble. He recently converted to cable modem and wants to eliminate AOL because it's just a horror show. I was hoping someone on this site might have the formula to get this done.

Generally, I've had no issues using Add/Remove Programs to uninstall AOL.
If you're concerned, set a restore point first (I'm assuming your neighbor has XP). Just go to Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tool-System Restore. Once you do that, uninstall all AOL apps and reboot. Oh, be sure to give your neighbor my congrats for removing the training wheels!

Removing AOL for good
Thank you Chevy. I've installed 2nd hard drives, modems, zip drives etc., that's the easy stuff. This AOL thing is unbelievable. Is there a separate web browser to AOL? I changed his preferred email to the new one but AOL opens anyway and runs some sort of update that locks his machine totally.

AOHELL has had a tendency to root itself into places it shouldn't be for years. Also, when removing it, a butt-ton of shyt is always left behind. You may want to try a reg cleaner as well to look for those things. And run the reg cleaner till it doesn't find crap anymore. Those things rarely find everything the first run. I have ran reg cleaners 3 or 4 times before it finds no more problems.
