ping

my pings aren't going anywhere. I chose approx 10 web sites at random in my Favoites list, and went to them. They loaded fine. I pinged each one while I was parked on it. The pings times out and told me 4 lost packets.

How can this be? Does this make sense that I can't get the right ping response from a URL I'm viewing????

pinging is on a different port than IE(80)...it is highly likely, nay assured they have this port blocked to prevent people from pinging their machine to death.

Also just because you are viewing the site doesn't mean you have an open connection with it

Thanks. Good info and good to know. I'm a complete newbie to the ping stuff, and had no idea what is normal or not.

it could also be your firewall blocking the ping command, or the ping port.

do you have a firewall?
does it ask you if stuff can connect, like zonealarm does?

Some websites don't allow you to ping them. For example, it is impossible to get a ping response from microsoft.com

I don't believe ping uses a port, but I could be wrong.

wouldn't it have to ping a certain port? or can it just ping the entire ip and wait for a response from one port?

Ping uses an ICMP request, and many sites indeed reject PING requests as a security measure. If you can contact the site normally with HTTP, there is no issue as far as failure to respond to a PING request.
