Newbie w/problem pasting URLs

This looks like a great forum, very up-to-date!

My problem has been with copying urls and then trying to paste them into a new email message. I am using IE7 now, but the problem has occured regularly with IE6 for some time. I am trying to post into Outlook emails.

What happens is that instead of the url when I hit "paste" there is an image that appears. It is a small box with a blue transparent cup inside it. There is also a green arrow point upwards from the cup, along with a yellow circle on the right side of the box. Also there is a rectangular outline on the right side of the box. I don't know how to copy a draft email I have saved that has the image in it for anyone to look at, unfortunately. maybe someone can help me with that as well.

I would appreciate any help understanding what's behind this and correcting whatever is wrong here.

Thanks, Dave

No, no foolin'! I have tried to attach a copy of the image I often get when pasting a url in Outlook for all to see. (I used the attachment feature here, browsed to a Word file I set up, and then hit upload - but I don't see the attachment anywhere attached to my message. I'm lost!) If this attachment doesn't get posted, I guess I need some tutoring in how to get this crazy image from an email format to you to see. Sorry, this is a bit frustrating!

Hi dave
If you have Paint.exe open it.
open the screen that has the image you want to show us
hit printscrn
open the screen with paint
right click with mouse and select paste. If asked to change picture size say yes.
from the menu bar, save file to filename.bmp anyname will do.remember where you saved it.
open your browser to http://imageshack.us/

using the browse on the menu you see before, select the file you just created. select ok / enter.

you'll have to wait a few minutes until the file uploads nd a new panel appears

a list of links will then be in front of you.
at the very last link highlight the whole link in the that box.
copy and paste it to the reply box in this thread

at the start of the pasted link type
[img]

at the end type
[/img]

preview your message
you should see your picture in the preview box, it may take a few seconds or minutes to load depending upon your line speed.
if not double check that the link is correct without spaces.
if all ok
close image shack and submit message

Hi Done Fishin,
Thanks for your detailed message and guidance. I tried Paint and failed because Paint regarded my DOC and RTF files as "not valid format". The image is in an email I have in Draft form in Outlook. Can I send it to you directly by email? What address should I use? Thanks,
Dave

the idea is that you use the "print scrn" key on your keyboard to grab a picture of the screen area, then use the paste command to put it into paint.

Well I see the picture but can't say I have ever seen anything like that before!

can you explain what you are doing, step by step, when you want to paste a URL into a document.

Sure! I select a URL in the address block of IE, go to Edit, hit Copy, move to Outlook (a small window opens there saying I will be using Word 2003 for my email formating, I think), using my mouse, place my insert point where you see it in the copy, go to Edit, and hit Paste. Voila-image you see. It doesn't always come out that way, but most of the time.

What I do next is go back to the original address bar and look at it. Sometimes I notice that the selected stuff somehow includes the symbol just to the left of the "http". That's it. maybe including that image screws things up, I don't know. I try to avoid including that image when I select.

Any further help will be most appreciated!

I have also but only recently installed and started to use outlook 2003. Having used Outlook 98 & 2000 and got used to the ways that everything is organised I was distressed to realise that everything is changed. Currently I even get a message telling me that I can't send mail because my address is blacklisted .. OUTLOOK 2000 works fine .. I think (until I get used to everything and find wher M$ has put the configuration) that OUTLOOK 2003 "SUCKS BIGTIME!!" My opinion.
I had a good look around tried to copy paste some URL's looked at the symbols being used in this version but couldn't see your icon at all.
Currently I am booted into WinME with OUTLOOK 2000 so that I can do some work .. it's a pain upgrading when everything you have ever learnt changes .. I can't even open archives from 2003 because they don't appear to be supported, but must find a way.
I will swap boot shortly and try adding that icon when pasting to see if I can confirm your suspicions. Best thing anyway is only to copy text. Just click once on a bit of the address and it should highlight it all, CTRL+C will copy to clipboard, CNTRL+V will paste the address wherever you click on another application.

Here I thought MS was the creme de la creme!

In my case, I used to paste URLs somewhat frequently w/o this problem, using my 2 yr old Dell Dimension. And then the problem just started up and the rest is history.

I'm wondering if there is a way to report it to MS w/o paying tech advice fees, say, by sending them an email. Can that be done?

No Idea, if you're a registered user with a valid copy of 2003 you should be able to book an online tech session, as far as I know, it's free.

I tried what you said but can't get the highlight to include the icon, so I have no way of repeating your problem my end to see if your theory holds or not.

all I can confirm is that a single click highlights the whole address.
have you by any chance downloaded any service packs for 2003? I can't belive that there aren't any. I have ony been using 2003 on occasions, it's on my work pc but don't use e-mail from there, only use my web mail facility.

I opted for Office 2003 on this PC (since I wanted to get away from Millenium since Millenium is not very efficient when running as a server, if I use it too much it seems to run out of cache memory, and crashes!) as I figured it was about time to get a better grip on the newer environment, along with giving a boot option to XP.
I'll be adding vista shortly to my other PC boot options .. probably turn out to be just another headche.

I'm wondering if I don't have your problems because I dont have IE7 .. you may notice that I wait until others have broken their private parts on new software before tangling with it myself! Any piece of software released by BG has to have a couple of SP's before it's useable but still buggy.

Regarding service packs, my WinXP had SP2 with it when I got it. I have downloaded whatever was available for Windows and for Office (inc. Word) from MS update since I got this computer.

The thing is I can't remember when this problem first started or I might go back and do a "system restore" to check on a change in pasting. BTW, the problem has been occuring under IE6 for several months, before I added IE7 last week.

Also, I find it interesting that you cannot get the icon to be included in the highlighting. Actually, what happens is I highlight the address alone, try to paste it, get the image instead, go back to the still highlighted address and I find that the icon is now highlighted also! Oops, not true. It used to be that way but I just tried it again and the image still comes up instead of the address, but when I went back to the address bar, the icon was not highlighted.

Finally, I'll check on the online tech session you mentioned. Thanks!

I have an update on this problem of mine. As I mentioned above, I am using IE7 now. I did a bit of testing on my laptop, also with IE7, and found that I can highlight a URL in the address bar, but the traditional Copy/Paste function gives me the same old image in an email, instead of of the URL. HOWEVER, if I highlight the URL I want and open the Page icon in IE7, there is a option to "send link by email", and it works. It's not the same as copy and paste, but it does the job.

If you're repeating the problem on another machine, then it sounds like a "bug" in the software code. Shouldn't happen but it does.

Yep, it seems so. Well, thanks for all your assistance here on the forum, Done Fishin. And give a nod to the Parthenon for me, please. It was fun visiting there in '65 on my way home from the Army in Turkey!
