Problem uninstalling IE 7.0 (RESOLVED)
Hello. I installed IE 7 only to discover that a couple of my applications
would not work with it yet. I uninstalled and lo and behold I was back at IE 6.1 . All was well till I had to interface with a new app that would not work using IE 6.1. The app support folks told me IE 7 does not uninstall properly and that if I wanted to use their app I would have to install 7.0 again. I can't do that because that would disable two other apps. I use all three in my businesss. So I need to know what my options are. I tried re-installing IE 7.0 hoping I could install in separate dir and run both 6.1 and 7.0. No such luck. MS does not give you control over the install dir (and they wonder why folks think MS is arrogant ....) . I tried uninstalling 7.0 , restarted the computer and then tried to uninstall 6.1No luck there either as I can't find it in Add/Remove Software. I did find it in Add/remove components and clicked on Internet Explorer and clicked on next. It did something but whatever it was ... it was not an uninstall since 6.1 is still there alive and well. Currently I need to run 6.1 and 7.0 on the same machine. Or I have to get another machine to run the 3rd app. Insane. Any and all help appreciated. Thanks Jake P.S. I also tried to reinstall 6.1 but system tells me new version is installed and quits |

Hi and Welcome to TSF
If "Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2 Preview" does not exist via Add/Remove Programs, run %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.e xe. You need to have "view hidden folders" enabled. Create a new key in the registry "InstalledByUser" under "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Microsoft\internet explorer" where you put your user name there, after that the uninstaller will work perfectly. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For Beta 1 you need to click on show updates to see the IE 7 uninstall entry in add/remove programs. For Beta 2 & later you can see the IE 7 uninstall entry as a standalone entry, no show updates required here. If you dont see the uninstall entires even after following the above steps then do the following - * Go to Explorer/Tools/Folder Options/View - Enable the Show Hidden Files and Folders. * Go to Start Menu/Run paste the following code & press enter(check the exact path in your windows folder) o %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$\spuninst\spuninst.e xe OR o %windir%\$NtUninstallie7bet2$\spuninst\spuninst.ex e OR o %windir%\ie7beta3\spuninst\spuninst.exe * One other way to do is to manually navigate to the path shown above and click on spuninst.exe. http://www.techenclave.com/forums/un...uter-6196.html

Hello Geekgirl
I searched my system for the spuninst/spunistf exe files. No luck. The only files I have that contain the char string "ie7" are a main log, an uninstall log, and a welcome url file
There's a chance that I didn't explain properly. When I first uninstalled IE 7.0 I did so thru Add/Remove programs and it appeared to uninstall properly. I then tried to re -install 6.1 but when I did it told me that it was already installed. So I started IE and it was there and it was 6.1. Bravo MS I thought. So I return to my original business apps and tey work just fine (but do not support IE7 yet). I got access to a 3rd app (similar to first 2) and it would not work with IE 6.1 on my machine. I tried it on another system I have where I run IE 61. and never installed IE 7.0 and the 3rd app works just fine. I called support fot 3rd App and they told me that IE 7.0 does not uninstall completely and that was my problem. That I needed to reinstall IE 7.0. I can't do that because I lose the first 2 apps. I can't use the other machine because it's not a laptop and I need to be mobile. I'm losing out here because of what looks like a software glitch and I am at a loss to figure out how to remedy. If I could run both 6.1 and 7.0 on same machine that would suit me just fine. Thanks for helping out thus far. Jake P.S. date on my 7.1 download file is 10/21/2006 if that helps |

How did you uninstall your IE7? Through Add/Remove Programs?
If you need to use both IE6 and IE7 on the same system, it is not possible. I would try Firefox 2.0 for your IE6 apps, and reinstall IE7 for the other app, or vice versa. Remember to test Firefox 2.0 with your two IE6 app first and make sure they are functional. |

Believe me if I could use Firefox I would. None of these apps support Firefox.
I uninstalled IE 7.0 using Add/Revove Programs. I guess short of reinstalling XP (which might not do it) I don't have many options. Thanks for reply Jake |

You could try to Perform a Repair Installation. After the repair you will need to visit the Windows Update site to install additional updates

As it turns out I got on with support for one of the apps I was having trouble with. I guess a lot of folks using the app had similar problems. We went thru and reset a slew of internet options and the app now functions ok. Please tell the powers that be that MS in general needs to be less intrusive/destructive in it's installs/uninstalls. I had no idea these settings were changed.
Same with no allowing user to select where to install or the inability to run 2 versions of IE at the same time. I don't understand that restriction. At the end of the day, thanks for your help and the latest update |
