IE6 Crashes When No Image Exists on Page

I run a custom community with over 80,000 active members. A few months back, I started getting quite a few complaints from members that said my website was causing their browsers to crash. I could not recreate the issue on my computers so I couldn't figure out what the problem could have been.

Then, a few weeks later, one of my computers starting having the same problem. After removing pieces of code to try and pinpoint the problem, it came down to a non-existant image... blank.gif. It seems I needed a fake gif image for certain parts of the website to display correctly, however, since the actual image file did not exist, it caused the browser to crash.

Did something change in IE6?

To correct the problem, I added a fake blank.gif image file and it worked.

However, now, I am realizing that if for some reason, I visit any site where an image is supposed to display and it doesn't exist, it causes my browser to crash again. The same for my website, if someone somehow uploads an image and it doesn't take, and then you go and display the page that is supposed to contain that image, the browser crashes.

Any ideas? Is this something that anyone else is experiencing?

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Sorry for the delay in replying, your issue seems to be within the code on your website. I have had issues with websites in the past that made the browser crash and it was indeed a code issue
