Invalid Syntax Error
Hi
I am having trouble with my internet explorer. Ever since my PC decided it needed to do a chkdsk my internet explorer has stopped working. I am now using Firefox to access websites but would like internet explorer back as a back up. When I try to open internet explorer I get Invalid Syntax Error in the top title bar and the following message. The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for might have been removed or had its name changed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please try the following: Open the www.bbc.co.uk home page, and then look for links to the information you want. If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly. If you still cannot open the page, click the Internet Explorer Search button to look for similar sites. Internet Explorer Also, when I receive e-mails through outlook express I am unable to see any images included in e-mails (such as company banners etc). I have been through several fixes on the HijackThis Log help side http://72.52.136.82/showthread.php?t=115999 and they have advised me I have been cleared of any malware issues. I hope you are able to help me |

2 Things: It sounds like your Internet Explorer problem is that your "Home" page is pointing to an address that is no longer valid. Can you get to other sites ok? Check some of your bookmarks, or simply type in the address bar WWW.Yahoo.com
As far as Outlook Express, this is a security setting. I may have to defer to someone else's expertise on OE, but I think most mail programs do this by default anymore. Is there an error of some kind that gives you the option of showing the banners or images?

Try going into the tools internet optins. Set every thing back to defaults. Go through all the tabs especially in the security and advanced. On the connection tab besure it does not have you pointing at a proxy. Had this happen... caused by a naughty web site.

Further to the previous posts. I reset the defults no luck.
I can't access any sites, after I try to open internet explorer I get the invaild syntax error message, if I then try any site I get Cannot Find Server in the title bar and the following message The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please try the following: Click the Refresh button, or try again later. If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly. To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting). Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings. Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK. Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed. If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0. Click the Back button to try another link. Cannot find server or DNS Error Internet Explorer With regards to Outlook Express I turned off the option for OE to block images. Could my OE problem be to do with the fact IE can't access any sites? |

OK, I tried to reinstall Internet Explorer and got the following message-
Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system. Setup cannot continue. I followed the instructions on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378/ to fix the problem (eg changing the registry) and it is still coming up with the same error. Any idea what I can try now? |

On the web site I reviewed there was one a key for IE and one for Outlook Express. I do not know how integrated they are but I woud turn both off and try again. If you got the message then the installer evidently did not recognize that IE could be reinstalled.

Tried changing outlook express one, restarting PC, then trying to reisntall IE but it still wont let me. Same message as before about a newer version of IE being detected.
Should I work thru regedit to find any entries saying internet explorer and change their entries to 0? |

Try this... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304872/en-us
If this does not work a reinstall of the OS may be the only thing left. Read the following to make sure IE is wiped... http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312451/en-us |
