Unable to open windows in IE

I recently started having a problem with opening pop-up windows in IE6 running under XP Home Edition. For example, when trying to update McAfee programs, it is necessary to click on an update button. This usually opens up a window to download the update. Now when I press the update button, the window opens momentarily then closes. I'm having the same problem with other websites. I've tried turning off the popup blocker and holding down the Control key but I still can't get the windows to open.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
many thanks,
Pilot

Hi,
try re-installing IE.

You may have problems with malware, so it would be a good idea to go through 'Having problems with spyware/viruses' in my sig. We have had the same problem before on a different computer, and it was due to malware.

Thanks for your very speedy reply. I did consider malware but I regularly run AdAware and SpyBot and my system is clean apart from Altnet, which I just can't seem to get rid of. I've also run McAfee VirusScan and again system is clean. I'll try reinstalling IE and see what that does.
Regards,
Pilot

This should help you remove Altnet: http://www.spywareremove.com/removeAltnet.html

I've reinstalled IE but the problem is still there. As far as Altnet is concerned, AdAware gets rid of it. What I wanted to know is is there any way of stopping it getting on my machine in the first place. AdAware seems to be able to block other spyware but not Altnet even though it's listed in AdWatch.
Many thanks,
Pilot

Hi,
please go through the 'Having problems with spyware/viruses' steps in my sig, and post a HJT log where instucted.

Do you have any peer to peer programs installed? Or any programs that could be causing spyware on your computer?

Yes, I run UseNext, Bit~Comet and BearShare Pro. As these are subscribed and not the free versions they are supposed to be spy and adware free.

This could be causing your problems.
I would advise you go through those steps I said about and post the HJT log where instructed.

A possibility? You probably have an old version of Yahoo Toolbar installed.
Certain versions of Yahoo Toolbar are widely reported to cause this problem.

To Joefireline and Flatiron2.
Thanks for your help. The main problem seemed to be corrupted files in IE. A nice Microsoft gentleman from Delhi spent over an hour on the phone sorting that problem out. I have other problems and Tetonbob is sorting those out in the HJT forum.
Thanks again for your constructive comments,
Regards,
Pilot.
