No Login screens/updates

For the past few months my computer has not let me log into websites with the exception of tech support forum and 2 other websites. when the log in screen comes up, i fill out my info and when it tries to continue on to the next screen, it stops and gives me a refresh page. also, when i try to update something, like ad-aware or other programs, it wont let me and usually says "cant connect to server". we just changed internets from adelphia cable to comcast so i thought it might fix it but it wont. my 16 year old son has a game called counter strike that he likes to play that also won't load. it also says "cant connect to server". if you have any suggestions please let me know.

So are they secure (https) sites...also have the little padlock icon at the bottom of your browser?

We need to find out whether it's jsut encrypted sites which are causing the problem here.

Ok, please try the following:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
control
- Click OK
- Double click the Internet Options icon
- On the General tab, 'Delete Cookies, Temporary Files (incl Offline Files) and clear History
- Click the Programs tab and select to Reset Web Settings, uncheck the reset Homepage option and then click Yes/OK
- Click the Advanced tab and select to Restore Defaults
- Click Apply then OK and try again.

Post back if that helps or not please :)

Ok...do you have a firewall installed?

Also, do you have an XP install disc? (assuming that you're using XP???) :)

Ok...please have a read through the following link and try as many of the suggestions as possible. Though as you haven't got an XP disc, there are some you will not be able to do:

Also, you could try re-registering some system files:

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
regsvr32 initpki.dll
- Click OK

repeat the process for the following files:
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 mssip32.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
regsvr32 softpub.DLL
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll

Also check that your system clock is correct..may seem trivial but could be a key factor :)

Post back on any progress please

none of those worked, i have a feeling we are running out of options....
do you think maybe if i either updated norton anti virus or possibly uninstalled it and got a new type of anti virus it could help solve the problem?

We're definately running out of options...if you could borrow an XP install disc, we may be able to sort it.

In the meantime, completely uninstalling Norton may help...even though the subscription has expired, the firewall side of things may still be having an effect.

You can use Zone Alarm's Free firewall and AVG's free anti-virus programs until you decide on a different product...s'up to you? :)
