internet explorer ver 7
I used internet explorer 7 beta 3 for some time but found it disabled HP director so I removed it. I just installed ver 7 RC 1 with the same results.
Removing cleaning register and reinstalling hewlett packard all in one(Mod 2175) will not repair the problem. When Internet explorer ver 7 is removed the HP director works fine. This has to be a bug in internet explorer ver 7 which should have been corrected by this late date. Thanks |

HP Director depends on / uses Internet Explorer.
The fault is with HP. HP will not release an IE 7 version or patch to Director until IE7 is declared final by Microsoft. The reason I emphasize this difference is that IE7 has a lot of security enhancements over IE 6, even patched IE6. If the HP method of invoking the Browser for its own purposes violates one of these security principles there is no way on earth Microsoft would consider changing IE7. Since you have removed IE, which I think the best course if you use HP Director heavily, you cannot test a guess of mine. I am willing to bet if you change the User Agent string in IE 7 to reflect IE 6 the issue disappears. Microsoft offers a utility to make this change in its Release Notes for IE7 RC1: http://msdn.microsoft.com/ie/releasenotes/default.aspx/ And the fiddler site has been there since Beta 1: http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx While any Beta has flaws, my guess is HP Director is not one of them. When IE7 goes final in a few months expect HP to release a compliant Director. .

Hi Everyone,
I had discovered the secret to getting the document scanner for the HP PSC 1350 to work BYPASSING and without using the Director to launch it. In order to get the Document scanner to work without using the Director you use enter a long command in the MSDOS prompt of your computer... For Windows XP Pro users follow these directions: The EASIEST way to do this create your self a file to run the command every time you wish to Scan your documents. Now the using the director made it easy, yes i know but since your using IE7 you cannot use the director. OK here's the workaround: Open Notepad. Copy the following text EXACTLY as shown into the file: cd \ cd program files cd hp cd digital imaging cd bin hpqkygrp.exe -n"#Hewlett-Packard#hp psc 1300 series#1158866720" -a"SCAN" -f"SCAN_DOCUMENT" 3) MAKE sure the LAST 2 lines are ONE single line, THIS IS CRUTICAL for this to work!!! 4) Click the "File" and "Save As" from the FILE menu in Notepad. 5) name the file DOCUMENTSCAN.BAT - DO NOT CLICK SAVE JUST YET!!!! 6) Set the Save As Type line below to ALL FILES!!! AS you DONT WANT to create a .txt file!!! Your creating a MSDOS BATCH File!!! 7) So now click save. 8) find and open the file and the Scan Document application now SHOULD LAUNCH without using the director!!! If there any problems with this workaround, email me at mattrd196@yahoo.com!!! I will try and help you out!!! Now this workaround is VAILD because I have tested it on a computer running Windows XP Pro (Service Pack 2) and have IE 7 (RC1) installed on my system!!! |

Really you CAN workaround the Director if you ABSLOUTLY need to WITHOUT removing IE7!!!
You need Norton Go Back in order to see the workarounds... First TEMPORARLY remove IE7 to revert it back to IE6. Next launch HP Director.... Now launch Go Back to see what files are run. (yes this is EXACTLY how I got the workaround info in my original thread) Now click on a icon in the Director... Go back to Norton Go Back and look for GREEN entries... You will see what commands the director executed in order to launch that SPECIFIC application... Yes a pain to do this that why I recommend you make a Batch file to do this for you... After you discover the SECRET commands to launch to specific application in the director, reinstall IE7. Now to use the application, use the commands that the director used to open the application and BINGO you have discovered the ways to open the HP applications WITHOUT going through the Director!!! ITS THAT EASY, you just need to learn how to use the commands which can be tough... TO BAD HP wouldn't make a EASIER way to access the files WITHOUT going through a centralized system (such as the director!!). Its really a PAIN IN THE BUTT having to ALWAYS use the director to access them... There should be ways to access the files Because what if the director become corrupted... I HATE to reinstall software just because there central system failed to work... Plus its takes FOREVER to reinstall the DARN THING!!!! i hope this helps BOTH users the use HP software, and HP designers!!!!! As the design really STINKS because there NO EASY back door into the applications if the Director fails!!!! Yes theres backdoors into the programs, except its NOT EASY to do!!!! it would be 100 TIMES easier if they made icons in the (start menu) HP folder to access the applications without using the director!!! Yes the director is NICE, WHEN IT WORKS, but if it dont work your done for!!!

I've just followed Bill Castner's suggestion and installed the User Agent String utility, but HP Director still won't respond and I can't use Mathew's suggestion, first cos I don't have Norton and second cos I'm using a 3970 scanner. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to IE6 for the time being. Ho hum!

That's possibly the best thing til IE7 comes out in final form.
Quote from HP "Let me share this information with you that the Internet Explorer 7 contains some plug-ins know as software that helps the scanner software to run perfectly. As plug-ins that are in the Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta Version are not compatible with the scanner software HP Director is not working. However, we are presently working with Microsoft to resolve this issue. In addition to that, the issue will be resolved only with the final release of Internet Explorer 7.0. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused. In order to make the HP Director work, you need to have Internet Explorer 5.1 SP2 or later but lower than the version 7.0. As a workaround, please uninstall Internet Explorer 7.0 Beta from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel." Regards, Pilot. |

Hi everyone,
Yes I forgot to mention my workaround will only work with a PSC 1350v printer, running HP 1300 version software... Sorry everyone else i really cannot help you unless I could access your computer... Sorry i cannot be a better help... Hopefully either Microsoft or HP will come through with a patch to fix there issues!!! As I said before i WISH HP would revamp there centralized system and make it so you could still access different programs without using the director!!!! Now i KNOW tons of programs that have many things to them, and they just install each one as icons... Now i know its nice having a centralized system (like the director), but what happens if the director program is incompatible with a new software... Your locked out it plain and simple... Plus they SHOULD NOT go relying on anyone Else's software to make there work... As HP use of IE to make the software work!!!! As that a issue waiting waiting to happen, what if a important driver, got messed up and IE didn't work... That would mean your HP product would be disabled also!!!!! Well HOPEFULLY IE 7 Final will be out soon!!!! I hear it suppose to be released in its FINAL FORM sometime here within the next month!!!!! |

Hi guys,
In case anyone hadn't noticed, IE7 is now out in final form. I've just installed it and got my scanner to work via Device Manager Still can't get HP Director to work, but at least the scanner's responding so it shouldn't take me that much effort to sort it out. I'll keep you posted. Cheers, Pilot. |

Still no joy
I've been in touch with HP and they say it will need a patch. They will give it top priority. At least I can now use my scanner, either by going into Scanners in Control Panel or opening up HP Photo and Imaging. It's possible I could have done it this way before but never thought to check. Better than nothing I suppose.Cheers, Pilot. |

Hi lead3,
I thought I'd give it a go, but it doesn't work for me. I can't even get HP Director to open up, which is the first step in the operation. I tried reinstalling HP but the result is the same, so I'll have to stick with accessing it through the Control Panel. Regards, Pilot. |
