dead internet explorer

when I click on internet explorer, I get an error message that IE encountered a problem and needs to close. Then the restart box is checked and we go round and round unless I click "don't send" after unchecking the restart. I uninstalled and reinstalled but still no go.

for details, I get:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: shell32.dll
ModVer: 5.0.3900.7080 Offset: 0001e345

I've run the virus scan (norton) and adware scans, cleared cookies and history.

This happended last week mid-day. I was able to use IE till about noon when the error began. HELP. I am using firefox currently but some of the web based apps I use only work with IE. I have windows 2000. Getting frustrated!!!

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Try IEFix

Click the Apply button

You'll be prompted for the Operating System CD or the Service Pack Files location:

If you're using Windows 2000/XP, insert the Operating System CD. For OEM systems, point to the Operating System source path when prompted. If you've applied a Service Pack separately, you need to insert the Slipstreamed Operating System CD (if you have one) or point the installer to the ServicePack source path when prompted (see Fig 2 below). Mention the path as "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386" or "C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles"

If you don't have the Windows installation CD, and if the installation source files are not present in the hard disk, you may click Cancel. IEFix will continue with DLL registration part.

Restart Windows

Did you follow these instructions yet?
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

Repair on Windows 95,98,ME, NT, or 2000

If you are using one of these versions of Windows then Internet Explorer 6 was not installed by default when you installed the operating system but rather from an upgrade. Since you upgraded to IE6 you have the advantage of having a repair tool that came with the installation.

To access this repair tool you should follow these steps:

1. Click on Start, then click on Settings, and then click on Control Panel.
2. Once the control panel window is open double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
3. You will now see a screen that shows a listing of all installed programs on your computer. Scroll down till you see Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and Internet Tools.
4. Double-click this entry and a screen will appear asking what you would like to do.
5. Select the option to Repair Internet Explorer and press the OK button.
6. Then press the Yes key to begin the process.
7. When it is completed reboot your computer.

If this method is not successful, then you may have to reinstall your operating system or try an alternate browser.
