Problem with Images/links
Hello,
We reformatted our computer a while back, and since then, we've had a few problems. Our Java won't work in IE for certain game sites, but will in Firefox. But one really annoying problem is that it often doesn't display certain images or links. For example, if you go to http://www.muchmusic.com/contests/ there should be images appearing beside the contest description. When you click on these images, it takes you to the page to enter the contest. For some reason, these images do not display on IE or even Firefox on this site as well as others. Is there a reason why this is happening, perhaps it has something to do with our Java acting up? If so, is there anything I can do to fix it? I've looked around in the advanced options in IE and Firefox and checked that certain boxes were checked and tried checking or unchecking others, and I even tried turning off all of my pop-up blocking software, all with no success. Any advice? Thanks a bunch, TheClash05 Last edited by TheClash05; 05-27-2006 at 10:56 PM. |

G'Day,
I suggest that as you have reformatted and reinstalled Xp, you'll need the latest Java software....go here to get it..... http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp Once you have done that, you'll also need to go into Internet Options > Advanced > scroll for Java and check the box > Apply > OK; then, reboot your system. Try the website again, and if this doesn't fix the issue; then, you'll need to go to google and get Microsoft VM and download it, or better still go to the Microsoft site and get it. Once you have that installed as well you'll need to do this...... Go into 'Set Program access and Defaults' > Custom > scroll down to choose a default machine for Java, click the circle for Java, and enable access for Microsoft VM > OK. Try the site again, and this ought to have rectified your problem. [ I tried the site without any hasslwes whatsoever.] Post Back with your results. Regards, Dave T.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply. I've made sure that Java is downloaded and I've even tried un-installing and re-installing it a couple of times. I've did their little test to make sure my java is working, and it says that it is. I found a copy of that Microsoft VM that you had mentioned through a google search. I couldn't seem to find a download link on microsoft.com though. Anyway, I went into "Set Program Access Defaults" as you instructed, and Microsoft VM was an option under the "Other" tab. I clicked it, but for some reason, it will not stay clicked. I'll click it and press okay, and then once I check back into it, "Use my current virtual machine for Java" is clicked. I also made sure to enable Microsoft VM under Tools - Internet Options - Advanced, but with no luck. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong? Thank you for the help, though. TheClash05 |

Hi TheClash05,
Ok...This might sound weird but does your Internet Options listing look like mine? TSF Desktop.JPG [Once you open the Attachment, you will need to put your cursor on it to enlarge it so that the text is readable.] Please let me know. Regards, Dave T.

Hi there...
Do you use a popup blocker called AdShield? If not, do you use any type of popup blocking software?

Thanks Nick,
That was going to be my next suggestion.....by the way The Clash 05, have you a third party firewall [ ie. not just the Windows Xp one]? If you do, it might pay to disable it until you can get into the site, then add the URL to the exemptions list in it. Lets know.

Tested it myself just to make sure...
With AdShield enabled: ![]() Without AdShield enabled: ![]() Also, as Dave suggested, check your Firewall isn't blocking the images...Norton is very capable of doing that :-)

Hey guys,
I fixed the problem. You were right, it was actually my firewall protection/anti-virus protection. We had Norton Security Centre 2005 (which automatically was on our computer for so many months when we reformatted). I tried turning the firewall off, but it didn't seem to make a difference. It's running out in a few days, so I decided to install Norton Antivirus 2005 instead, and it doesn't come with the firewall protection that Security Center came with. Once I took out Security Centre and began using just the normal Anti-Virus, all of the problems I had with Java and games and with images and links not showing up seem to be fixed. How strange. I can't believe all of those problems were caused by Norton's program! Hopefully someone else may read this thread with the same problem and know what the root of the problem is. Thanks for all of the help and suggestions. :) |

G'Day,
I'm glad to hear that all is sorted; however, as Nick mentioned, and you have discovered, Norton has a tendency to control your computer, instead of YOU controlling your computer. It is for these reasons that I exiled Norton in favour of AVG Professional Anti-virus and Zone Alarm Pro for my firewall, as AVG and ZOne Alarm seem to work harmoniously together! Good Luck. Regards, Dave T.
