IE 6 wont install

I am running IE 5.00 and want to get MSN Messenger. But now I need IE 6. So i go to Microsoft and download it. I run the IE6 install file only to have it tell me I have pending work requiring a reboot. Please restart etc. So I reboot but to no avail, same error. I try again and again. But nothing. I tried to uninstall it but it wasn't in my add/remove list. I went Googled for help but still nothing. Anyone help me? Running 98 SE

Hi Helpless Guy and welcome to TSF
  • Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  • In the Search for files or folders named box, type wininit.ini.
  • In the Look in box, click Local hard drives, and then click Search Now.
  • In the Search Results window, right-click the Wininit.ini file, click Rename, type wininit.xxx, and then click OK.

NOTE: The file should be located in the Windows folder.
  • Close the Search Results window.

Try installing IE6 now. Does that help?
