IE not loading any pages...

Hi people.

This is something starting to bug me. Seemingly at random, Internet Explorer
has stopped loading anything I ask it to load. That includes remote sites,
Windows Update, or sites on my own copy of IIS...

I've tried disabling ZoneAlarm, Avast, closed MSN Messenger (which works
fine incidentally) restored IE's factory settings, ran AdAware and reset my
PC countless times.

I ran regsvr32 on a series of DLL files as suggested several times around
the web. I tried running sfc /scannow as suggested on the MS KB but that
hasn't helped. I tried uninstalling a WU which is known to break IE, that
didn't help. I tried upgrading to IE7, that didn't help.

I've started up Ethereal to see what's going through the network, and
NOTHING happens when I try to access a page in IE. I try in Forefox, and I
get masses of TCP activity as you'd expect. Also my firewall is showing no
signs of IE trying to get through. It's clear to me that IE isn't even
trying to access the interweb.

Anyone got any other ideas? I haven't even installed anything new
recently...

Oh and Firefox still works fine... I only need IE for WU and my online
banking!

Thanks.

IE won't handle http protocol

I've been having a similar problem for the last couple of weeks. Seems that IE6 and 7 work fine EXCEPT when I'm trying to use the http: protocol. Same deal with the Webbrowser component. Firefox works fine.

I've tried reregistering the dlls, running sfc, checking for hijacks and spyware with no success. IE does not appear to generate any Internet activity for http protocol.

System Restore sorted it.

Dunno why, nothing's changed recently to my knowledge!

Winky, try a system restore, and if that doesn't work, do a repair install.
IainG, it might have been a virus or something that altered the registry, I would run a virus/malware scan to make sure there is no malicious activity on your computer.

Cry

I have the same error, except i had system restore off before the incident. I've tried avast, other virus scanners, spyware scanners everything. IE won't work in safemode but Firefox always works.

I am able to access an FTP site in IE6 but not http.

Did you try all of the steps that IainG described in his first post? Running sfc /scannow by copying and pasting it into the run box might fix it. Also, if you have offline web pages, does it load those?

I did run the scan now thing, and it didn't work.

As by offline pages, you mean html docs stored on your computer(eg. file:///d:/htdocs/index.html)

Yes

If i type in localhost host, it does not work, so i don't think it is able to go accross my network or something. (but firefox can)

This is puzzling me, I'm going to get some help from the microsoft newsgroups. Please wait. One more thing you could try is to go to the below adress and see if that works. Its a text document, I want to see if its only HTML files it can't read.
http://home.comcast.net/~matt.modica/sysspecs.txt Then try and access something via the FTP protocol.

The Text file doesn't work. But accessing my FTP server does as usual.

I think there is something wrong with IE's http:// protocal. There is another thread in this forum with the same problem a couple pages back with no help.

M restore points don't go back to when the problem started. I ran the sfc with no improvement. Reinstalling IE didn't help. Not sure how to do a repair install. If it's what I think it is, it'll mess up a whole lot of my other custom settings that I'd rather not lose.

FTP works fine. https works fine. http just sits there and generates no network traffic.

Everything is fine in Firefox, so I'd imagine it's something specific to IE, perhaps some registry setting or a dll that got deleted by one of the recent MS patches.

You do a repair install by inserting the XP CD on boot as if you were going to reinstall, but when it asks you what you want to do, select repair install. you won't loose files or settings. If that doesn't work, you could always get the internet explorer tabs extension for firefox so you can display pages like windows update on it.

Oh, dear. I did the repair install and I'm STILL getting the same behavior. The Firefox extension for IE tabs behaves identically to the real IE. This is really weird!

Re: IE not loading any pages...

I also am having the same problem with HTTP sites, which will not load. Only HTTPS sites will load, I have tried various fixes with no success. I refuse to reload the OS, I would really like to get to the heart of the problem. I know of two other machines at work this has happened to and the OS was reloaded on both of these machines. My MSN messenger and secure web sites work just fine. Does anyone have any fresh ideas? Thanks

Grin SOLUTION FOUND !!!!! FOR - Re: IE not loading any pages...

SOLUTION FOUND !!! SOLUTION FOUND !!! SOLUTION FOUND !!! Hooray..........did the adobe uninstall, re-install yada yada
nothing worked till I hit the INTERNET EXPLORER RESET BUTTON

In the menu Bar (if your menu bar is missing right click on the tool bar near the Home icon on iE7) click on internet tools, advanced option.....and at the bottom you will see RESET INTERNET EXPLORER .

Go ahead and hit that button and your misery (hopefully) will end.

My internet explorer started laoding all pages thereafter.

Hope this helped............conifrm if it did in your case as it amy be the simplest solution to the problem.

Happy surfing........best wishes from Dublin, Ireland

Re: IE not loading any pages...

Hi there, i've been having the same problem, IE not working but mozilla is. Annoyingly a few other programs aren't running online too, so perhaps i may have a wider problem. Just wondering if anyone has found any other solutions as i've tried the above, but no luck so far.
