First thing I would do, is to look at the program(s) you want to run. Will they run with Vista/Windows 7 or XP. How much RAM are you going to need.

$500.00 will not get you a whole lot. My last Dell, very basic laptop was about $600.00. (XP home 512 RAM).

If you can get buy with a small screen, like 10 inches, maybe this would do:

http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/mini_...ls&s=dhs&cs=19

Starting at $299.00

It will not include word, excel, powerpoint, or Adobe. Also these little tap tops will not have optical drive!

Re: Need help on whats right for me (laptop/netbook)

For more stable Laptops and one that will last longer, I highly recommend Lenovo. The Dell laptops that we have here at work have all been sent out for repair for diff reasons, most of them are motherboards/screens, the good thing about Dell is their warranty, make sure that you buy extended warranty. With our Lenovo laptops (used to be IBM) I've never had issues with them.
You can purchase one for under $500. Right now they have a Free shipping promo going on.
Hope this helps.

Totally with you there. Dell is a brand I would not and will not ever buy. Lenovo laptops are made by the engineers who developed IBM's fine desktop and laptop computers. They cost more but are worth every penny.
