itunes and windows wont recongize ipod

I am having trouble getting i tunes to recognize my ipod. One day my ipod was working fine and then just suddenly it stopped working.I got on the phone with apple and they did nothing for me except tell me to get on the phone with dell and they did nothing for me except tell me my warranty has expired and that for a small fee of 78 dollars they could fix this issue. i have read almost every article ever made on why this happens and how to fix it and none of them help. The problem i am having is that my computer wont recognize and ipods but will recognize other usb things cell phones,flash drives etc.. I am wondering if anyone has this issue and can help me. i am running windows xp and itunes latest version.
