Problems with nVidia 5700 FX and my moniter
I have been having problems on and off with a particular combination of driver, moniter and video card for the past few months.
My video card is an nVidia 5700 FX. My moniter is a Gateway 2000 Vivitron 17" (I do not have a gateway, but bought the moniter from a friend for a cheap price as he wanted to upgrade) And my drivers vary. Now the problem is, is that when I completely update my drivers to the most advanced form released by nVidia.. the moniter goes blank when I try to load most any sort of program that is graphically intensive. This does not occur when I use the drivers included on the Microsoft XP SP2 CD (default microsoft driver) Now, at first I thought it was a driver or video card problem, but recently I tested my computer with another moniter entirely, and it worked completely fine, no problems whatsoever even with the most updated drivers. Is this a known problem with this moniter type? Any solutions anyone can think of? I know the most obvious one is to not use anything beyond the default, but there are graphics applications and games that I would like to use that not only recommend but now REQUIRE the updated drivers. Does anyone have any solution? Or any reason why this might be wrong and how to fix it? It is DEFINITELY a compatibility issue with the driver, video card, and moniter. |

My parents have a Gateway Vivitron, they're nice monitors. The default drivers that come with XP give the card basic functionality and the ability to use color depth beyond 8-bit. They also feature minimum refresh rates and virtually NO acceleration!
It's strange that the drivers from nVidia would fudge it. I suggest looking through their archives and finding the 66.xx drivers as they worked great on the FX generation of cards. www.omegadrivers.net also has them.

![]() That is what it shows me here for my display, etc. This is not what was shown above. (also, an aside, I don't usually run it in 800x600, rather, I run it in 1024 x 768) Do you know how to make it from this picture into what was shown above so that I can override any settings? These are beta drivers from nVidia I should mention, 84.25. |

That monitor max range is 1280x1024@75 Htz. What does it say in your "monitor" tab in those screenshots? It should identify your monitor as "Vivitron 2000" etc or "Standard Plug and Play", but the thing is that you might not have what you need listed there in order to allow your system to actually get proper refresh rated and resolutions. Some older monitors will be just fine with standard plug n' play drivers but some are not ok. The nice thing is that that monitor is actually are rebagged Sony and we can load a profile (driver INF files) for another Vivitron or a "just alike" sony model to make it work ok.
Now, show me what is listed here_

Tp follow up on this just try to make sure your monitor, or another monitor driver that is close enough is loaded and properly ID'ed in the monitor tab (example)
![]() - and it might give you more resolutions to play with. I will be out of town again starting tomorrow morning and again won't be on this forum for a while (1-2 weeks) but i'm sure other members know exactly what i'm talking about and can guide you there. If you are running a refresh lock @ 800x600 it's likely that your refresh rate is actually trying to load at 120 Htz - which might be out of range. Get the proper driver (or one close enough loaded) and use no refresh lock (to begin with) and you should be able to get 1024x768=100Htz, 1152x864=85Htz, 1280x1024=75Htz just fine. For your monitor 1152x864 would be ideal to run with. |

Does anyone have information on where I'd get a Vivitron monitor driver? I tried to download this one file that included everything before 1999 in monitors (for gateway, which apparently the vivitron is from) but it did not work. Any help would be appreciated.
