ATI Catalyst 6.3 creates problem.
Those running XP 32 or 64 who have a Radeon video card and who choose to upgrade the driver to 6.3 unwittingly creat a problem, but one that's easy to fix. As usual it's correct to uninstall all the previous drivers and reboot before installing the new driver. After the Catalyst 6.3 is installed your machine will keep complaining it cannot find files needed to install "new" hardware. It is annoying but easy to remedy.
Go to the C:\Windows\Driver Cache folder. You'll find some folders there. Choose the one that matches your cpu (Intel or AMD) and open it. Inside there will be a .cab file. Right click it and choose "Explore". Then hit and hold the "Ctrl" key and press "A". All the files will be highlighted. Choose copy and back out to the main Driver Cache folder where you'll paste the files. Once they're there, reboot and everything should install just fine. You'll get a few warnings about unsigned files, just hit "continue anyway" and you'll be done. Just to be sure, go to device manager and make sure you have no yellow "bangs" for "unknown devices". If there aren't you're good to go. Why the bother? Because the 6.3 is a vast improvement over recent Catalyst drivers. The 6.2 especially was a poor set. Incidentally, the Catalyst Control Panel takes up a lot of real estate and can add much time to your boot. If you don't need all the fancy tuning options you can uninstall the Control Panel from "add/Remove Programs" and make any adjustments from the Display properties menu. |
