6600GT Problems.. oh noes !

Hello,

Ive recently acquired a 6600GT to up my old systems performance a slight bit.
However after 2 days of working without a hitch my PC decided to crash in mid flight while playing The Godfather ( the game ). I just restarted my pc and thought none the worse from it however as i booted i had some strange flicker/dots on my screen during boot+win xp loading. It then was smooth sailing for a few minutes untill it started to hamper and the monitor went off then 15 seconds later came back on like nothing happened. That was alarming enough so i tryed a quick reboot, alas same flicker+dots on my screen once again and where it should have gone to the Win Xp loading screen... my monitor just went into sleep mode....for the rest the system sounds like its running fine and i assume it boots.
I have tested the monitor on another system and am now running the system fine with the old card.

Specs:
Intel Pentium 4 1.7Ghz not OCed
Kingston 512Mb PC2100 RAM not OCed
Leadtek A6600GT 128mb TDH DDR3 AGPx8 ( Running in 4x) not OCed
Windows XP Home 5.1 SP1
FSP250 Power Supply

Looking at this i thought .. well damn its gotta be a power supply problem with the new card eating too much ... however.. it had run 2 1/2 days solid without so much as a hint of problem... while doing a whole range of stuff ( watching movies , gaming , image processing )... so any help that can be offered will be appreaciated to find what cause or is the cause of this error

did a test on http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ already and came out to 265 Watts using the 6800GT as a GFX card

According to that link, it's a 250W running at 70% efficiency at full load, with only 13A on the 12V line. Even with the 150% overload protection feature, it's nowhere near powerful enough for your system.

Did you add 30% to the figure in the power calculator to account for efficiency? That would bring it up to 345W, so you're going to need at least a 400W with much higher amps on the 12V.

I'm surprised it lasted so long. The overload protection would have helped, but you can't always rely on that. From the symptoms you mention, it's possible that your new graphics card may be damaged. Can you test it in another machine or with a higher quality PSU?

meaning i just have the hdd connected and the gfx card
or is that not possible ?

You could try, but with a 250W PSU and only 13A on 12V you'll probably get the same result when you play a 3D game.
