Game runs with Nvidia but not ATI Radeon

I have a friend who is furious at me. I bought him an ATI Radeon card as a birthday gift. He installed it and it worked great. But he has this old Tetris game (CRTetris if it matters) that ran great with his 64 mb Nvidia card that came with his machine, but the graphics don't work with the ATI card. It just shows a skewed monochrome image of the main screen. He's running XP. I've tried to run the same game with my Win 2000 system that has an ATI Radeon 9250 card and I get the exact same result.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

CRTetris is a DOS game which sets a non-standard video mode: 800 by 600 with 16 bit pixels. Normally, DOS games using that kind of resolution used the VESA BIOS standard and the ATI 92XX video cards claim to support VESA. But given that it's an ancient DOS interface, and the likelihood that noone at ATI has tested DOS interfaces in a very long time, I wouldn't assume that it's going to work anymore. Perhaps you should suggest that your friend track down a decent Windows Tetris game. There's probably about a gazillion of them. By the way, I would have made fun of him for playing Tetris but I was just playing it a few minutes ago .

I tried it on an ATI Radeon 9800 and it messed up the screen and crashed. Google "free tetris" and take your pick. There's also some online Flash versions.

Have you tried running the game in different compatabilty modes? Tried messing with the different visual settings like run in 640x480 or 256 colors? Worth a shot!

To do this right click the executable go to properties compatability.

Yeah, jnob, thanks for the suggestion, but I've tried about every setting possible and it makes no difference. There is something about the ATI card versus the Nvidia. Thanks for trying.
