6600 Gt ?????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

hi , ist post
Ive had to upgrade my geforce4 mx440 to 6600GT ok i also had to fit new power supply to run the card (500w)
My son is trying to play the new battle for middle earth 2 ,after approx 30 min the game slows up. I closed the game and rebooted machine .i got an nivda error message stating the card isnt getting enough power and has lowered itsperformance to allow safe performance ??
i installed the new drivers from nivda site ..
Should i uninstall the drivers and install the drivers that came with the card
Or could it be a faulty card ??
Thanks for any replies Biffo uk

Hello and welcome to the forum..... It is normal for Nvidia cards to "slow down" if the vid card is not recieving ample power, if the msg is that the vidcard is not recieving enough power, then I would look first at the vidcard and make sure it does not have a molex connector on it that needs to be installed for additional power, You may also want to look on the mobo to see if there are any aux power connectors (like a molex connector or a square 4 pin connector) that is usually present to supply additioal power to the mobo. You may also want to check the voltage requirement for the new card and make sure that the proper voltage is selected in the bios since the new vidcard almost certainly requires more power than the older one it replaced. For that Nvidia card (6600GT) I suspect its 1.5V but double check Nvidia to be sure. Finally, not all psu's are made the same, a generic 500W psu may infact put out only 365W of power, chances are a generic psu will not have stable voltages, and/or you may want to rearrange the power distribution on the rails so that the loads are spread more evenly....ie vidcard, one hd on one rail and cpu and dvd on another......let us know how it goes

Make sure that the only molex plugged from that cable goes to the video card and use other cables for your other devices. That will be the best you can do.

If you have 4 devices on the one cable (sometimes referred to as a RAIL) then the power needs to be split.

Look at the side of the power supply, you need to make sure that the +12V line is putting out at least 20Amps (a 500W PSU should have more on the +12V but as said above not all PSUs are the same.)
