System crash when GPU strained

Hi,

Basically, when i do anything to strain my GPU even the slightest, my pc completely crashes as if power was lost to it.

To keep things simple and easy to follow im going to list all the things ive tried, or important things. This way you can see what ive tried or use for example without reading lengthy paragraphs.

- Specs:
Radeon x1800xt
Antec Truepower 550w
asus a8n32-sli deluxe
3 sata drives
1 dvd-rw
2x1gb corsair 350LL pro RAM
athlon 64 3500+
if you want other or more detailed specs let me know

- highest temperatures monitored before crashes:
cpu: 35C
MB: 32C
HDD's: 38C
GPU: 55C

- GPU was working 100% fine on previous dfi infinity nf4 motherboard.

- PC is 100% stable as long as i dont do anythign to even minutely stress the GPU. i can watch movies, browse the web etc all fine but 15 seconds of a game or the ATI artifact scanner and it crashes.

- with the side panel of the case on, the pc crashed during windows installing within 2 minutes, however i have not tried it with windows installed, while booted i have the side panel off and a big desktop fan almost touching the components.

I'm really tired so cant think of anything else right now.

My only ideas are that certain parts of the card are overheating, which the sensor is not picking up due to being far away, or the card got damaged during changing MB, or the MB is damaged in someway, or perhaps (please god be this)the bios is not set up right.

Thanks for reading and i appreciate every last bit of help anyone can give.

sounds like a heat issue or psu. but when i saw u got a antec truepwr 550 then i would eliminate that.

maybe its just toooo hot in your case ? get some more fans get a better GPU hsf and see with that.

as im rereading your first post i see that it was working fine on the old motherboard. maybe the new one needs a new chipset driver to make it work perfectly. see if there are any other related problems like this for the same motherboard and if there are any bugfixes or new chipset drivers

My CPU voltage is jumping up to as high as 1.71v from its default 1.52v, is this dangerous and un-normal? Also my +5 jumps from 4.84ish to 5.48ish sometimes too.

Cry x1800xt system crash

Hi, Did you manage to solve your crashing issues?

I have the same problem with my card.

OEM RADEON X1800XT 512MB CATALYST 6.3 DRIVERS
ABIT FATAL1TY AN8 MOBO LATEST NFORCE4 DRIVERS
2X 1GB CORSAIR VALUE SELECT 400/3200 DDR RAM
AMS ATLHON 64 3800+
MAXTOR 7200RPM 250GB SATA H/D
NIKIMI 7200RPM 120GB IDE H/D
550W POWER SUPPLY(ALSO TRIED MY OLD 400W WITH SAME RESULTS)
CASH FANS/COOLING ETC COMING OUT OF EVERY OROFICE POSSIBLE

I have just finished building this computer and have updated all drivers to their most recent releases.
As you said in your post, anything remotely strenuous on the GPU and it crashes - either by instant power down, or the program shuts down. Is there a program where I can set the GPU fan speed to stay on maximium To try and cool the chip to max from the off?

this appears to be a fluctating power supply, and yes, even a name brand one can go sour.

this voltage popping is not a good thing

I tested 2 molex's and the power flow was completely stable, not even a slight hitch, however i still need to test all the other conenctions as just 2 molex's isnt very thorough.

Also, I'm curious, is it safe for my "voltage regulator" on my x1800xt to sit around 60C when idle with stock fan speeds?

i just rebuilt my computer and used my antec 550w tru power from the previous system
i have it ajusted right up and at the moment i am running onboard video and it is barely falling over the line supplying enough power,so i know it will not cope when i put a video card in
quality supplies are hard to obtain here and are well over $200 usally closer to 300
