screen goes black after reformatting hard drive and downloading NVIDIA vc driver

I reformatted my stepson's hard drive and the monitor display was "primitive" so I downloaded the NVIDIA driver for his GeForce 2 video card. Now he gets all the colors and quality but it seems like when the computer is "chewing" (working hard) the screen goes black for a couple of seconds. What is the problem?

sounds like a motherboard chipset error. make sure you have all the drivers for the motherboard installed.

Ah indeed! I did not know of that necessity and am most thankful for the suggestion; will investigate and keep posted. Thanks.
