Well im not to sure, but I think the X1600 is equiv to the geforce 7800... so even though its 128bit insted of 256bit, its of a higher model card.
Apart from that, I never liked ATI cards, and think a 256bit would be better, so I would personaly go with the 6800GS. Its an excelent card anyway.

The 6800GS is worth the extra $20. It usually beats an X1600XT as seen here and here. The X1600XT has a weird design which includes only four ROPs which could be an achilles heel in some circumstances and also is a bit limited in memory bandwidth due to its 128 bit RAM. The 6800GS, on the other hand, is a very well balanced card with no weak spots.

That power supply is unlikely to work with either of those video cards. On paper, 15 amps at 12 volts isn't enough for those kinds of video cards. Sometimes, the power supplies included with machines like Gateways, HPs, and Dells are conservatively rated and can actually deliver more current than the specs would lead you to believe. So people can occasionally get away with adding a mid-range video card like a 6800GS. But I wouldn't count on it. You'll probably have problems as soon as the video card kicks into 3D mode and it starts sucking up lots of power.

As far as which video cards will work with that supply, you could run into trouble even with a 6600GT. If you add just about any kind of decent current video card, you could have serious trouble with a 288 watt supply. Are you sure you can't replace the power supply? The size given at Gateway's page is a standard ATX size.

By the way, do you have a link to the whole computer so folks can see what you're upgrading?

I've looked at your computer's motherboard pictures and that looks like a standard ATX power supply to me. The rest of your machine is fairly quick so I'd personally get at least a 6800GS and then add a new power supply if necessary rather than compromise on a slower video card. This 4 pin connector and this 24 pin connector just look like the current version of ATX. I'm not sure why they would tell you that you can't replace it. You might call them again and make sure but that sure looks like a standard power supply. You can get a rough estimate of your power consumption using a power calculator. This is another one.

Well, with a 300 watt power supply you really can't guarantee that a 6600GT (a very popular card) will work. They will usually work fine but sometimes they won't. 6600GTs are reasonably quick in their price range but they usually suggest at least 350 watts. So, if you want to play it safe you could get a GeForce 6600 DDR2. It's not the world's fastest video card but it's a huge step up from your onboard video and this particular video card is a relatively low power card for its speed. There are faster cards which sell for less but they will put more of a strain on your power supply. You could try a faster card and then underclock it to reduce power consumption if you have problems but there is some risk in taking that approach. The 6600 DDR2 is a reasonably safe choice.
