nvidia geforce 5200 problem

i just had my PC built with the following specs:
P4 CPU 3.0 Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 128Mb Nvidia Geforce 5200

when i first got it and plugged it into a CRT monitor it worked fine. Eventually i tried it out on the TV and it again worked alright. Now when i plugged it into the monitor again it promts "No Signal". There is an onboard graphics card which should be disabled. i'm not completely sure about that as i don't want to stuff up BIOS.

At the moment, i took out the Nvidia graphics card and is running on the onboard one perfectly. VGA was not fully installed so i reinstalled its drivers. Previously on the TV i may have changed resolution, would that affect how it runs on the monitor? After trying on the monitor and failing i went back to the TV and it didnt run on that either. Should AGP be selected in Bios?
So any suggestions would do good, thanks.

When you insert an AGP video card, most onboard video is automatically disabled. But some new motherboards can run both the onboard video and an AGP card simulataneously. What motherboard do you have?

I'm not running an NVIDIA at the moment so I can't check, but you may have accidently told the video card to output only to the TV. On ATIs, the output appears on both while booting but it may be different for NVIDIAs. Seeing as how it worked the first time you tried it, I would insert the 5200 again, hook the monitor to the 5200, and try to boot in VGA mode (instructions here). If that works then I'd uninstall the NVIDIA display drivers in the Add or Remove Programs window and then reinstall the drivers again. That should return you to your previous setup. If the video refuses to appear on the 5200 then try to connect the monitor to the onboard video with the 5200 still in the machine and try to boot into VGA mode again. Then go through and uninstall and reinstall the 5200 driver.

So you get no signal to the monitor on either VGA port, even when the machine is running the BIOS power up screen? The BIOS power up screen should always appear on one VGA output or the other. If it doesn't appear then you should try clearing the CMOS on your motherboard to reset things back to square one. At that point, the power up screen has to appear on one VGA output or the other because there are no drivers loaded yet.

I downloaded the motherboard manual. Unfortunately, it doesn't include any BIOS information. But appararently, the chipset on your motherboard isn't automatically disabled when you insert an AGP video card. It has something called "DuoView" which sounds like (I couldn't find specific technical info) you can run both the motherboard video and an AGP card simulaneously. That means that somewhere in the BIOS, you'll have to be able to tell it which one is your "primary" video card. You should set that value to "AGP". It is probably set to AGP by default anyway. Most BIOSes initialize that value to AGP. It's ignored as long as there is no AGP card so your motherboard video is the primary video. Once you insert an AGP card, it automatically takes over as the primary video card. At least, that's the way it's supposed to work.

ok so i managed to get into the VGA mode through plugging the monitor to the onboard card. but now when i uninstalled and reinstlled the drivers, no new setup commences afterwards. under display adapters only the onboard card is found, Via/S3G Unichrome Pro IGP. when i try to install the display drivers the error reads :the Nvidia setup program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware.

This is happening with the FX5200 in the AGP slot? It definitely won't install the drivers if the FX5200 is removed but it should do it with the card in the slot.

You don't really have to muck about with drivers or Windows to find out if thing's are okay with the video card. You should be able to tell just by seeing the BIOS startup screen being displayed properly. There should be an option in your BIOS which allows you to select which is the primary display. It can be either the onboard video or an AGP or PCI video card. You should be able to remove the FX5200 from the slot, connect the monitor to the onboard video, and then look around in the BIOS for that option. The manual doesn't cover the BIOS but that option must be in there somewhere. It's usually called "Primary Display" or "Init Display First" or something like that. The options should be "Onboard", "AGP", or "PCI". Just try setting it to "AGP" and then reinsert the FX5200 into the AGP slot. If the BIOS startup screen doesn't appear on the FX5200 then you have problems that cannot be fixed by fiddling around with drivers or Windows because neither are loaded yet. I'd do this first to make sure you don't have any hardware problems.

I've got to go in about 15 minutes but I'll be back in about 8 hours (may be a little late down under - or is it early?).

what is your PSU? I just bought a 5200 PCI and I didn't know it before I bought it, but it require 300W or more to run and the computer I put it in didn't have that so it locked up and wouldn't boot alot. I still haven't gotten it to work. Check power supply to make sure it can handle the card.

Good luck!

well i tried doing what you suggested and did bout everything else i could think of. i have come to the conclusion that the card is faulty. if the AGP slot was spoilt it should be acknowledged in Device Manager, right?... lol, oh well... just means i get an ever newer card:P

Bad AGP slots are pretty rare. As best as I can recall, bad AGP slots usually still show up okay in the device manager. But I've seen way more bad video cards than bad AGP slots. The best way to be 100% sure is to try the video card in someone else's computer. Especially in a motherboard which doesn't have onboard video to confuse the situation. If no BIOS power-up screen appears on the video card, then you know it's the cause.
