Things to try:
  • Disable fast writes and slow AGP down to 4X (or slower): AGP instability can causes freezes or crashes. Slowing AGP down and disabling fastwrites can often fix the problem. This page gives instructions on how to do it.
  • Make sure it's not overheating: A GeForce4 MX440 isn't likely to be overheating but it's possible. You should check to make sure the heatsink isn't loose. If it's got a fan, then make sure it's still turning. You can try running the machine with the case open and rig a desk fan to blow on the video card. If that fixes it, then you've got an overheating problem.
  • Make sure your CPU is okay: Your CPU is more heavily loaded in games than almost all other programs. It's a good idea to make sure it can work reliably when stressed. Run Prime95 as described on this page for a few hours.
  • Run DXDiag to check your drivers: The DXDiag program can generate a thorough listing of your drivers. To do that do the following: Click Start, Click Run, type in dxdiag, click OK, click Save All Information, save the dxdiag.txt file, and then post dxdiag.txt as an attachment to your next post.
