Brain Usage 0%.....please save me.
Hi Peeps,
I just installed a new graphics card (Radeon 9550 256mb AGP) and all went well, windows detected new hardware and then installed driver from CD supplied...cool so far yer All ran ace, Halo...super smooth, my other OpenGL mode programs...awesome. Fantastic Then......... started pc this morning and got a funny black screen saying... "Please select the operating system to start :- 1 Windows XP Home Edition 2 Windows Recovery Console Trouble shooting press F8 then basically it said select one but just as i read that it selected #1 for me and the boot up continued as normal.... All things appeared ok until Windows selected new hardware ? Radeon 9550 Secondary ????? i clicked on it to make the bubble go away to which it did, then the screen went black and then came back on........ so i checked device manager and my new Radeon 9550 is enabled and working but also i have a Radeon 9550 secondary enabled and working, strange thing is last night the Radeon secondary was called S3 SavagePro + Utilities which is my previous graphics adapter which is onboard and shared 16mb of my SDRAM ?????? SO here is my problem, I checked the BIOS and i cant see any reference to disabling the now not needed S3 ProSavage but neither can i see any reference to any graphics adapters but then i dont go in the BIOS that often if at all...but i left it how i found it. How do i stop the "select operating system screen" coming up each boot up and how do i stop the screen from switching off and then back on once booting up has done. ? Also how do i disable the Radeon secondary adapter other then in device manager ? things i have checked.... All cards are sat in correctly, Video installation drivers done again including all uninstalls Hope you can help me as the pc runs spot on once these niggles at boot up finish. Thank you and regards Lee ![]() I supplied my system info below. Last edited by lee.richards; 01-07-2006 at 08:40 PM. |

The secondary refers to the secondary output on the card. It's 100% OK for it to be there.
The other problem is likely due to the way boot.ini is configured. Use the run command and enter msconfig. Check under the boot.ini tab and make sure all the boxes there are clear except the large one at the top with text in it.

Thanks for the responce.
Firstly if i disable the secondary it stops the screen from turnig off and then back on after boot up. I disabled it in device manager. Is this ok ???? Also i checked msconfig and all the boxes are unchecked and here is the text in the top box [boot laoder] timeout=3 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/fastdetect/NoExecute=OptIn C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"/cmdcons If i click "check all route paths" on either of the last 2 lines i get this same message :- It appears that the following line in the BOOT.INI file does not refer to a valid operating system "C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console"/cmdcons" Would you like to remove it from the BOOT.INI file ? Yes or No |

Squashman,
Have you any thoughts about my graphics card issue ? I will refresh it. I had an S3 prosavage onboard shared 16mb graphics adapter (still have i guess) and i recently fitted a Radeon 9550 and my PC installed it no problems but it didn't disable the Prosavage one. It just stated that the drivers for this device were not working which in effect i suppose disabled it...but.... The next time i booted up the PC found new hardware again, this time it found a Radeon Secondary...so i went to look in device manager and this Radeon secondary has replaced the Prosavage ??? Weird thing is the secondary is also enabled and working correctly. So here is what happens on boot up which is annoying ! 1 Pc turns on and boots up 2 Just before the desktop comes on the screen turns off then on instantly. 3 Desktop Items and programs kick in and then........ 4 Just when you think boot up is done, the screen turns off and then on again ? Now if i manually disable the Secondary Radeon adapter in device manager the second turning off and on of the screen stops. Now ebackhus quotes above :- "The secondary refers to the secondary output on the card. It's 100% OK for it to be there." So have i done the right thing disabling this secondary or is it normal for the double screen switching to occur with a separate graphics card being used ? I ain't got a clue Cheers Lee Last edited by lee.richards; 01-12-2006 at 03:42 AM. |

Do not try to disable the "secondary" Radeon... it is supposed to be there.
It is for dual display support. Windows will use the Radeon as primary card... but usually (not always) there IS some sort of disable feature in the bios for "on-board" devices. |

Half the time, when you drop in a new card, the onboard hardare is automatically disabled. This may be the case here. Also, right click My Computer and click Properties and see if you have 16MB more memory.

Umm, just a thought.
Do you mean that after the Windows XP swishy bar loading thing appears, your monitor switches off and on again before the login/desktop screen appears? If so, this is normal, I think all Radeon cards do this, certainly my 9600SE and 9800PRO both do it. I think it's something to do with loading the gfx drivers. |
