Windows XP Freezes on the "Welcome Screen"

hi all!

i have "asus radeon x300 se", pci-e, and when i replace it with "leadtek px6600gt extreme", the windows freezes on the welcome screen (well it doesnt actually freeze completely - i can still move the mouse, but the windows wont proceed any further... and as far i can tell its in 1024x768 resolution :) )
safe mode is the same, it shows the black screen with safe mode titles in the angles of the monitor, theres mouse, but no icons nor the start menu

when i put my x300 back, all is fine - the windows boot normally and i can install the catalyst without any problems

things i tried so far:
-installed 6600gt
-removed all ati drivers with "add/remove", and then installed the 6600gt
-removed drivers with an utility for removing all nvidia/radeon drivers, and then installed the 6600gt

also i tried all that with updated bios (the newest for my p5gd1 motherboard)
and updated intel cpu (with infinst_autol.exe)

the result is always the same: xp freezes on the welcome screen

also i tried running the instalation of the xpsp2corp again (its bootable) but it too froze on the menu where i had options: enter to proceed, r to repair, f3 to quit (tried both "enter" and "r", and none of them worked - the instalation froze)

(ht could be the problem, eh? but if i disable it will i be able to use it again after instalation of 6600gt, if any?)

the computer is:
intel p4 3.0 ht
p5gd1 motherb
2x512 kingston ddr400

working: asus x300 se 128 mb
not working: leadtek px6600gt tdh extreme 128mb

the only thing i didnt try (and frankly cannot try) is to replace the power supply - but since the windows boots to the welcome screen and i can move the mouse freely i guess thats not the issue here (and my supply isnt that weak - 350W).

thanks for all the suggestions!

it appears it has been a broken card
i just went out and replaced it

and now works perfectly... had even forgot to uninstall the drivers (whole catalyst) for the x300, and it didnt mind!
