there's like a billion different x800's... help choose
for christmas i'd like to get a new video card because mine right now is a piece of crap (nvidia fx 5700 le)... and i've choosen to one of the x800 series video cards. but there's like several different kinds (gt, gto, xl. ect ect).. and i'd like to know which would be the best, i'm willing to spend whatever
i need it for gaming, i play cs:source, hl2, doom 3, farcry, fear, halo..etc. i have an agp slot.. these are all the possibilities, i think that the standard x800 is the best, but i dont really know x800gt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102619 x800gto http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102608 x800 pro http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814121519 standard x800 (the most expensive) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102532 i have a p4 3ghz 800fsb 1mb l2 cache, 512 ram (getting more soon) your help would really be appreciated, thanks. |

I was looking at the GTO and it seems to have better specs and its cheaper, but I could be wrong. I think the first three will be better than the standard though, I have no clue why its the most expensive.

The GT only has 8 pipelines, the other three have 12. The GTO is $50 cheaper than the other two and with similar specs so it may be the bargain. The other two seem to be able to be modded to enable 4 more pipelines for 16 total, but it is not guaranteed I think.

The GTO is a really good option, especially if you're on PCI-E (the Connect3D GTO can easily be flashed to 16 pipelines).
AGP is a little bit trickier. Some x800 Pros can be flashed to 16 pipelines, but some newer ones can't. A GTO gets you more or less the same power as a Pro (the GPU speed is a little slower, the memory a tad faster), but you're generally not going to flash a GTO to unlock pipelines. Ideally, you would get an XT or an XL, which already has the extra 4 pipelines, but those get expensive and you might as well get a different card altogether. Someone on this site (jflan) suggested these tables when I was trying to build a new computer: ATI Chips Comparison Table http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/131 nVidia Chips Comparison Table http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/132 Hope this helps! |

hello there,
im running the x800XL which is very nice :) i got it for 250$ the extra 4 pipelines make a big difference from 12 to 16 you will notice. Also you might want to take into considaration a 6800 which you could try to mod to a 6800gt. those are very competative to a x800XL if not sometimes better. time flies but with the new cards like the geforce 7 and the new x1xxx series you would need to upgrade to a whole new system cause you need pci-express good luck on your choice i recommend the x800XL got it beginning of summer 2005 and its very sweet. but i also recommend flashing the GTO cause you can flash those very easy or go with an nvidia option like a 6800 and flash it to a 6800gt

I managed to softmod my 6800 to have 16 pipes. I liked it because I got the boost but didn't do something that could be hard to undo if I wanted to sell the card later. Now I'm running a 6800GT with bad fans, whee!
