Serious Upgrade Problem, Radeon X700 PRO

Whewwww. I'm a little under stress looking over this. Explanation:

I had a Radeon 9600 All in Wonder. It all works good, need something new. I decide to get a Radeon X700 PRO. I pop it in, everything is working great, I hit the games for a few hours, and I get ready to close down. All of a sudden, my screen starts getting fuzzy, before long, THIS happens.

Crazy huh? It all seemed okay during the games, so I decide to try installing new drivers from ATI.com. I didn't see much difference, the colors kept getting worse. I decide to email a friend and show him the same screenshots. I turned off the computer waiting for his reply the next day (today) and I've now seen he hasn't replied. Now I turn on my computer and . . . something is weird.

It looks like safemode, but it's not? The Screen resolution and color texture are "locked." Not really locked, but when I attempt to change, it prompts if I like the change, I click "Apply," but it resets to what it had (600x400, 4-bit color) It won't change. I'm going to experiment, but please help me out, this kind of thing is aggrivating when you finally get your new video card and bad things happen! Let me know if you need further information, I'll try to fill you in on anything you need. I don't know what else to post except my feelings. =(

Also, I had an error while installing the software, I got an error:

0x80040707

What's that? Maybe totally unrelated, if it is, don't bother, that's another issue.

@ Mana Dragon
Two thing I would think of.
I would consider reinstalling your drivers according to this excellent guide.

I would also have a look at your PSU to make sure it has the power to operate this card. Unless you already have a quality PSU, I would consider a new quality PSU with at least 500Watts from Antec or Enermax. My new favorite PSU to recommend is the Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 500W. At ~$76 delivered, it is the cheapest quality PSU I've seen. You may find it cheaper if you search a bit.

Here is what I google for your error. If you haven't solved your problem, you may try to follow a few of these links for a solution.

Keep us posted with your progress.

Okay thanks. Some of the stuff in the guide was pretty much taken care of. I was messing around and somehow, everything started working again? I un-installed my software to start over, and everything seemed fine. So I try to re-install the software and drivers regardless. When I did, there was a new error, it was similar to what was above, but different, I'll try to post if it comes up again. But there has been an "infinite loop." Right now I'm doing a system restore so I can try again.

Power Supply . . . I'll check when my computer boots up normally. The power supply I'm using was from a Gateway in 2002. I hear Gateways are difficult to upgrade or aren't compatible with others? (I'm not using a Gateway, it's just the power supply)

Alright, I want to be clear on the driver. Whenever I install the display driver, all hell breaks loose.

https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27

I would click "Windows XP Drivers and Software" then "RADEON" for my new card, and click "Catalyst 5.11 Windows XP - Driver Download." Is this correct?

Everything is a-ok when I un-install, but when I install the Software from the CD, it gets stuck in the loop. I've looked over the 0x800 problems but everything seems normal so far. (Regedit and such) I'll keep digging.

Try downloading the newer software from the ATI website as well. I think this might be causing you problems...I don't think you can use the older MultiMediaCenter or CatalystControlPanel from your original disk with the newer drivers.

Actually . . . I've been installing and un-installing that driver. New problem arises when I install the drivers, it will prompt to reboot, I choose to reboot.

It will boot up and everything looks normal, however, it does not load the User Login Screen. Right now, it's just a black screen. I could manually shut off the computer, load safe mode, and un-install the driver.

I'll try what you suggested for now, but do you know if that driver is the correct driver? (The only software I'm seeing are the drivers?)
