Video Acceleration question
Im trying to install the game 'The Chronicle of Narnia' but when I click install -- it tells me that my pc does not meet the requirements. It says I need a video acceleration called 'vshdr' and i have 'accel' -- i tried clicking on more help and it talks about directx 8 requirements...which I already upgraded to DirectX 9.0c by going to microsoft.com
---------------- according to gateway.com's system test, here's what I have: Processor Intel Pentium 4, 3000 MHz 200MHz external bus BIOS Intel Corp. AG91510J.15A.0816.2005.0214.1818 02/14/2005 Memory 1024MB physical 90% free resources 4 memory slots, 0 free (512+) Video Graphics Adapter: Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family Screen Area/Colors: 1024x768 pixels, 16 million colors Monitor: Gateway 5051 Operating System Upgrade Windows XP SP2 (Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2) Original setup date: 11/11/2005 DirectX Version: 5.03.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) Swap file managed by Windows File cache managed by Windows --------------- Can anyone tell me what I need to do to upgrade the driver? The Narnia cd advices to run the directx test which I did and passed...and to upgrade the driver. I tried clicking the 'upgrade driver' from my display adapter properties but winXP did not find an upgraded driver. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Does the system test confirm that you have enough Video Memory? If so you can just bypass the Video Accelerator test by installing the disc, closing the window that appears, then click Start, Run, find the setup.exe file (there might be two - on right on your D: and one under a D:Setup folder - and only one will work, so try both). That should bypass the accelerator test altogether, you just have to be sure to cancel the autoinstall window first.

It appears that some of the "Minimum requirements" are at best misleading (if not outright wrong!)
The box says Direst X 9-compatible, 64 MB OR (emphasis OR) TurboCache (tm) Direct 3D card with Vertex Shader 11.1 AND Pixel Shader 1.1 Support (NVIDEA GeFORCE class or equivalent). BUT when you take a look at the buenavista web site, if you look long and deep enough, you find that they indicate there that a number of video cards are NOT compatible even though they DO support Direct-X 9. It took a bit of looking to even locate the tech support page where this minimum bit of info was listed. Quoted from:http://bvgsupport.go.com/techdocs/disney/getsolution.do **** Begin Quote**** The following is a list of compatible graphic chipsets with Vertex and Pixel Shader support. For details on support of Vertex and Pixel Shading, refer to your hardware manufacturer's specifications. Please note that this is not a complete list: * ATI Radeon X Series * ATI Radeon X1 Series * ATI Radeon 9500-9800 Series * Intel Graphic Media Accelerator 900 and 950 Series * nVidia GeForce 6 Series * nVidia GeForce 7 Series * nVidia GeForce FX Series * S3 Deltachrome and Gammachrome Series The following graphic chipsets do NOT support Vertex and Pixel Shader technology or DirectX 9: * ATI Radeon 7000 Series * nVidia GeForce 4 MX 4000 The following graphic chipsets have issues installing and/or running The Chronicles of Narnia and Disney's Chicken Little: * nVidia GeForce 4 MX Pixelation in certain areas * nVidia GeForce 4 MX 420 Lightning bolt appears corrupt * nVidia GeForce 4 MX 440SE Pixelation in certain areas * nVidia GeForce 4 Ti 4200 Graphics appear torn * Matrox Parhelia Distance fog does not appear properly * SIS 315 The game runs slow, about 15-20 fps (no resolution) * XGI Volari Locks to black screen and forces reboot (no resolution) In certain cases you may bypass the System Checker to allow the game to install and run, but the issues described above will be present. **** End Quoted Item **** In my case I was trying it on a Radeon 7200 64 Mg. card and got the same error as listed. The DXDiag says the card passed and all my drivers are as updated as possible. All of the flying boxes and cubes displayed properly when running the various test modes in the DXDiag program. Thus Direct-X9 seems to be supported BUT NOT the Shader section. To me the way the box is labelled is somewhat deciving! It appears that only Direct X 9 is needed UNLESS you have the Turbo Cache Direct 3D card. Trying to install the program, bypassing the checker, setup brings a fatal error on the Install 4th CD which lists that it cannot read a file although the file is listed in the directory on the C drive (long link to the game program files) I presume that this is part of the same problem. Just as an experiment I loaded the program into another computer with a different video card. It passed the system checker fine saying that no problems were found and I should be able to install. Yes, It did install BUT when you try to run it, a FATAL error comes up saying that the Shaders listed above are not present and you will NOT be able to run the game. All in all, I would give this game a NEGATIVE RATING and NOT RECCOMEND IT based solely on the technical issues which seem to be designed to mislead people and the fact that even when a system does pass their own system checker, the game still will not run! (at least in this one instance) If they want to use the newest, latest, most demanding video drivers on a kids game like this, THAT SHOULD BE PLAINLY LISTED ON THE BOX (not in 4 point type on the bottom!) OR AT LEAST A PROMINENT WEBSITE ADDRESS WHERE THE DETAILED PROBLEMS LIKE THIS COULD BE MADE KNOWN TO POTENTIAL PURCHASERS! A WEB BASED SET OF INSTRUCTIONS TO DETERMINE IF YOUR SYSTEM WILL WORK WITH THE GAME WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THIS! |

I too have had problems and now given up on this game. My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420
According to the Narnia website listed in an earlier post, the game should work except for problems with lightning. The DirectX test comes up fine with DirectX9 working. I also downloaded the latest nvidia graphics driver from the nvidia website to be on the safe side. The Narnia installation CD still gives a fail on the video acceleration. This may be because Nvidia only WHQL certifies Geforce 6 and above, so the Geforce 4 driver does not have the WHQL certificate. Using the setup.exe from the Narnia CD runs the installation, but then the game won't play, with the error message saying the card does not support Pixel Shaders v1.1 I give up and am not impressed by this game.

The 7x00 and GF4 MX series are NOT DirectX 9 cards. They only support DX7 features.
The 9500+ and FX series both support DX9, though the ATI's do a far better job of it. Radeon 7x00 - DX7 Radeon 8x00 - 9200 - DX8 & 8.1 Radeon 9500+ - DX9 GeForce2MX, GTS, Pro, Ti - DX7 GeForce3Ti - DX8 GeForce4Ti 4200-4800 - DX8.1 GeForce4MX - DX7 GeForceFX (GF5 series) - DX9 That's all from memory, feel free to correct me or make additional changes.
