Radeon 9800 Pro fan replacement?
Hello
The fan on my Radeon 9800 Pro recently started making a lot of noise (its about one and a half years old). I unscrewed the fan, cleaned it out as best I could, and replaced it. Unfortunately, I lost one of the tiny mounting screws whilst replacing it. Also, it is still making too much noise. Is there any way to replace just the fan? I bought a case-mountable fan (which screws into a PCI slot) but it didnt do anything. I have seen these "silencers", like this one Are they good enough to replace the stock fan (instead of accompanying it). Also, how do they work? Do they fit straight on the graphics card? |

@ Azmodeus
The VGA cooler linked is an excellent replacement for the current stock VGA cooler. It cools better and is less loud(more quieter? ). If you cannot get or don't want to get a replacement fan for your stock cooler, then the one linked would do nicely. This cooler replaces the current stock cooler. You will need some thermal paste to apply between the heatsink and chip on your card...check with the vendor, the unit may come with some.

Ok, great to here, ill defiately be getting one of those then!
I couldnt really understand what you meant with regards to mounting it, so I decided I would take the heatsink off to check it out. What a horryfying experience! There were 2 'clips' holding the thing on, which went right through to the other side of the card. To take the heatsink off, I had to pinch these clips with some pliers, so they would compress and fit through the holes. If that wasnt bad enough, I had to force them back through the holes when it came to putting the heatsink back on. And I mean really force them! Nothing inside a computer should have to be forced that hard! Anyway, seems like no harm done: I cleaned a lot of dust out from under the heatsink, and I now know where it all fits in. With regards to the thermal paste - ive seen a packaged version of this fan, and it looks like there is a tube of the stuff inside the plastic packaging, so I should be ok. If it arrives and there isnt any, its no big deal, i'll just go out and buy some Thanks ever so much for your help, ill go buy that now and hopefully have a much quieter computer because of it! |
