Radeon 9800 Pro Problem Please Assist

Hello My computer is running off of:

A 2.4 ghz Intel Processor
756 Megs Of Ram
Motherboard: Unknown
Windows Xp Home Edition
A NMB Power Supply with 1--V-200V Input and a 295 W. Max Output
It is also an old Sony Viao Desktop.

But now to the problem. I have have had my card for nearly two years now and the problem started a little less than a month ago and has slowly gotten worse. While I am using my computer at random times, 5 evenly spaced green vertical lines will appear, and anything that passes through the lines will not refresh and will be left imprinted in the lines for a good while. The problem usually occurs from somthing as simply as bringing up the start menu, opening up a file, or firing a weapon in a game. It only seems to happen when something must be brought up on my screen. Here are some images taken from my desktop and what happens during the F.E.A.R. demo.

So far I have uninstalled all the drivers and hardware, removed my video card and blew all the dust from it. When I thought it may have been a heat problem a set up a massive box fan with the side panel off. The computer had been off all night as well and as soon as I hit the power button I could see the problem had already started. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

First of all, there are more than one suspect in this scenario:

First, we need to know what motherboard, so am including a free Everest program that will tell you that:

Download and install this free program called Everest and it will tell you everything about your computer.

Second, have you downloaded the very latest drivers from the ATI website?

Third, your power supply is suspect and is probably weak for a CPU of this strength.

Fourth, Some times when you have a problem like this, the Omega drivers will help the issue;

When you get more info about your system a repost might help us to understand the problem better. Feel free to try the other drivers and see if that helps.

Alrighty,

Here are some of the specs for my motherboard, and thanks for the Everest program.

Motherboard Properties:
Motherboard ID 12/05/2002-SiS645-P4S533VL
Motherboard Name Asus P4S533-VL

Chipset Properties:
Motherboard Chipset SiS 651
Memory Timings 2.5-3-3-7 (CL-RCD-RP-RAS)

Motherboard:

System Memory 768 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)

I also do have all of the current updates and drivers for this card, and i was wondering if it was the power supply, what would cause it to suddenly not be able to power my card? Just asking because I have been running this card off of my pc for about two years now. I have also been told by others now that it could be a frequency problem, and I have no clue how to check for that. So if you think that could be an issue could you please let me know how to check that? Thanks for your help.

Looks like your VRAM may be on its way out.

If my Vram goes out would my only choice be to buy a new video card? Also I plan on picking up a new power supply tomorrow to test out that theory, and if it doesnt work ill just return it to the store. If it is the card and not the P/S would you recommend just going to get another 9800 pro or something a little more different? I would hate for this problem to occur again.

If your Power supply is 2 years old or more and it does wind up being your video card keep it. Your going to need it anyway. The newer supplies from Antec and Enermax and PC Power and cooling are more efficient and deliver better performance throught making for a more stable system.

Also take out one stick of RAM and see if that is your issue One stick at a time.

Also about the drivers. Tumbleweed is correct about the Omega Drivers. I went form an ATI AIW9800 Pro to an ATI X800XT PE and nither Cat5.7 nor 5.8 would run this card without giving Desktop artifacts. As soon as I went to the Omega 5.7 drivers, problems were fixed.

Make sure you completely uninstall all the ATI stuff with this Driver Cleaner Program before putting new ones in. Try the driver things first. If it works you will have saved money in the long run.

Thank you all for your help, I have now ruled out the thought of it being the power suplpy because I went out and bought a 550 wat power supply today and the same problem occured as soon as I hit the on button. So now im making a trip back to comp usa to return it tomorrow

. Surprisingly when i booted my cd just now the problem seems to be gone....and im not sure how. If it occurs again though I think i will simply reformat and see what good that does me. Thank you all for your assistance in this. You have been a big help.
