I had been running my PNY Verto Geforce 6 6600GT for three month, everything was great, 60FPS on half life 2 (full detail and 1280x1024 res.) etc. and then one day it didnt work. Every game i tried to run it crashed before anything happened on the game. e.g. Warhammer 40K: Dawn of war, loaded up then crashed on the menu (there are 3d graphics on the menu in-case you havent played dawn of war) but it didnt crash in the normal respect as in freezing it kept stopping for a literal minute......then moving to another frame. Also for some reason it ran in windowed mode, so i rebooted thinking that it was probably just a virus which takes up power for no reason (im sure you know the sort). When i got to the desktop all the icons loaded etc. then Wham Bam Thank You Maam! the thing reset and it continued to do this several times. Then i decided to put my old 9600 back in and now it is working fine. This could be a 6600GT problem or it could be the PSU failing for some reason as the 6600GT requires more power than my 9600 as it has a fan. Please help i can't cope with 20FPS on half life 2 any longer lol.

The constant restarting and the fact that a lower power gpu stopped it definatley sounds like a failing power supply. First thing to try, if you have access to another psu I'd swap them to test that out. I'm 99% sure it's not anything to do with the 6600gt itself.
