alright i got a weird, or maybe not so weird, problem. i just put in a second 512mb stick of kingston hyper-x pc2700. everything is fine, load times are down, res changes are quicker, multitasking is seamless, blah blah blah. the problem is, when i play the sole game on my computer (CNC Generals), my FPS just bottoms out. Before with just 1 stick of 512, everything was smooth and only once in a great while would i even catch it hiccup. Now it just drags during cutscenes and gameplay, and some textures aren't showing up. Oddly enough though, load times are faster in the game and the crawling frame speed seems consistent rather than jerky. Photoediting is fine, movies play just fine, sound is working fine. I reinstalled Generals, I swapped RAM slots, BIOS is updated (according to ASUS update), I changed resolutions, and i reseated the AGP slot to make sure i didn't bump it during the ram install. Still the same results. Do I simply need to download the latest Catalyst driver or is it something else? I'd really rather not buy a new card since i rarely game on PCs anymore.
Here's my system: Asus P4PE Mobo Pentium 4 2.4Ghz 64Mb ATI All-in-Wonder Radeon 8500DV 1Gb Kingston PC2700 DDR w/heatsink 20 and 80 gig WD HDDs |

Have you run MemTest86 to be 100% sure the RAM is running properly? You might as well also update your display drivers just in case there was some kind of old bug related to having too much memory. Just be sure to uninstall the old drivers from the "Add or Remove Programs" window before installing the new ones you download from ATI (instructions here).
This could just as well be a software problem with Generals or something else as some kind of hardware problem. It would be useful to know if only Generals is slowing down or if it's all 3D programs. You can download 3DMark 2001SE and use it to benchmark your video card. Then compare the result you get to other people with similar hardware to see if the problem is with all 3D programs or just Generals. |
