Problems reinstalling/updating ATI drivers
I was having problems with the Microsoft Management Console, so I could not run defrag, search for folders, open the device manager. After hours of trying to fix this, I upgraded to Windows XP SP2 and it fixed it all.
During the install, there were some errors about the video card. I ignored them and continued. Afterwards, I am trying to reinstall the drivers for my ATI Radeon 9600. Running the install for the latest Catalyst drivers as well as the 3 year old drivers that came with the computer result in: Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup. In the device manager, there is not even a place for Display drivers, so it looks like the card is not installed at all. There are no graphical problems that I can tell so far. It appears the video card isn't recognized and needs the "standard VGA driver" before I can update with Catalyst. Any ideas? In Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced, in the Adapter tab, there is nothing listed *EDIT* Possible related threads http://www.techspot.com/vb/all/windo...not-found.html Last edited by rpheckenkamp; 07-14-2005 at 07:32 AM. |

Running in VGA mode did not change anything.
Apparently, when installing a new card, windows first automatically installs the "Standard VGA driver". This is not a new card, but I'm just updating the drivers. I've rebooted several times since I've had this problem and it's never recognized the card, perhaps saying it's new hardware. What if I reset it, like perhaps taking the card out of my case and then putting it back in?? I found a forum that had the same problem http://forums.tweaktown.com/archive/...p/t-12829.html It looks like he reinstalled windows. Upgrading from Windows SP1 to SP2 via CD is what initially caused this problem. Should I use the CD to install windows again? Can you install it on top of itself like that?
