Video prob. w/counter strike.

Hello all...I am losing my mind a bit, so I'm searching out the last avenue of help. Here goes. I have a Ge Force 5500, PCI. After updating the driver and screwing around with stuff I'm running into problems.
1) minor deal here, the monitor will not display the very beginning of the computer booting...it reads....cannot display video mode. However, once that's through everything is fine.

2) the real dilema....for some reasone the counter strike, steam software will not detect my direct x capabilities, and reads....cannot initiate video mode....then locks me out of the program. I know the card supports direct x....and I have no problems playing jpeg files and such....below is my dxdiag stuff....

I'm guessing it's some very obscure problem having to do with me switching drivers a bunch of times and screwing up a step or two.

Regarding problem #1: I'm not sure why any monitor would refuse to display the power-up screens. They use a plain old ancient VGA mode that any monitor should display. You could look in the BIOS and make sure that the "Primary Video Display" is set to PCI. It may also be called "Init Display First" or something like that.

Regarding problem #2: I don't see any problems with your DXDiag except that your onboard video drivers may not be completely gone. Assuming you're not using you onboard video anymore, take a look in the Device Manager and see if your Intel865 still shows up in there. If so then try disabling it. If it doesn't show up there then look in the "Add/Remove Programs" window and see if an Intel display driver shows up in there. If so then uninstall it.

Thanks for the response. It's strange because, using the integrated card the start up screen is present...but using the GeForce card, not...I did get into the game somehow...and am afraid to screw things up....Steam thinks I'm using the integrated card...which it says doesn't meet the requirements...but actually I'm using the other one, so I disregard their warning and in I go....I'm afraid that if I totally get rid of the integrated display adaptor, I'll be back in the same boat.

That's probably because the "Primary Video Display" option in the BIOS is set to the onboard video and the startup screen is appearing on it. Did you look in the BIOS for "Primary Video Display" or "Init Display First" and make sure it's set to "PCI"?

To fix this problem you're going to have to change something. Even if you delete all of your video drivers, Windows will still boot using default drivers and then you can reinstall them. If you like to be careful then create a system restore point (instructions here) and then you can use it to undo any changes you make.

Well I switched the bios setting and the start up now works. I ended up changing back to a 6 something driver and although steam wants me to update that to the latest 7 something, the game loads up fine and plays well. I think I'll call it quits while I'm ahead....I might totally get rid of the intel driver, but don't want to push my luck. Thanks again for the help.
