Xtasy ATI 9800 256mb problem restarts my computer
I have xtasy 9800 ati, and when i do online gamings like America's Army it will automatically restart my computer like if someone unpluged my computer out of the wall. This seems very evil and I need help as soon as posible. Here are my computers facts.
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Pentium4 3.2gig Msi mainboard For intel 350w of power supply windows XP sp1 512MB of ddr ram Xtasy ATI 9800 256mb AGP %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% I checked couple things on my computer to see if it fixes the problem. I've checked to see if the computer is over heating and it wasn't over heating becuase i have so many fans in there around 4 fans. Also the drivers are up to date so I dont this its software issue. Im not sure if its power supply problem becuase I added a 40BG of harddrive myself. Last edited by ANTHONY19; 07-12-2005 at 05:20 PM. |

Does the same thing happen when you run an offline game or is it online games only? Does the computer turn off consistently after running for a few minutes or does it seem to do it at random intervals? What brand of power supply do you have and what is its current rating on the 12 volt rail? You can get that from a label on the side of the power supply.

This happends when I usually play online gamings, but I seen it do the same when im not playing online games. It's a ATX power supply.

Does the computer crash after running for a few minutes or does it seem to do it at random intervals? How long do you have to be playing before it happens? How many hard disks and CD-ROMs do you have installed?
Your power supply provides 12 amps at 12 volts. That is a marginal value but you may be able to get by with that. When you have your problem, does the computer turn off and stay off or does it restart and reboot like you've just turned it on? If the machine just turns off completely and stays off rather than rebooting then that suggests that the power supply is your problem but it's not 100% certain. If the machine just reboots then you've just had a garden variety crash. The problem is that the only way to prove you have a power supply problem is to swap in another power supply. Before spending any money on a new power supply it would be a good idea to do some tests. 1) Try slowing down your AGP port using SMARTGART. Unstable AGP ports are pretty common and cause crashes in 3D games. There are instructions on how to slow down your AGP port here. 2) Despite having lots of fans a video card can still overheat. Try running the computer with the side of the case open and aim a desk fan at the video card. If it stops crashing then it's overheating. 3) It's a good idea to make sure your RAM is okay. See if the computer can run MemTest86 for a couple of hours without errors. 4) Make sure your CPU isn't overheating or cracking up under stress. You can do that by running Prime95 as explained here. 5) Check that your power supply voltages are in range. The 12 volt rail is the one which is most likely to cause your problems. There are instructions on how to do that here. |

Have you had a chance to try #1, #2, and #5? #1 solves crash problems for lots of Radeon 9800 users. I had to slow down my AGP port to 4X to get my Radeon 9700 Pro to work properly. And you didn't say whether your machine is turning off or whether it just restarts. It would be helpful to know that. |

oh , ya i forgot it restarts on its own like if someone unpluged the power and pluged it back in.
So far I slowed down my OpenGL, Direct3D to 4x. I couldn't find the smartguard software. I ran a memtest for 2.5 hours and No errors everthing passed. I had 13 passed and 0 errors. I also did prime95 test which my computer failed almost 2 hours later and I have no idea what caused it. Last edited by ANTHONY19; 07-15-2005 at 12:17 PM. |

This page explains how to find SMARTGART. You have a Radeon 9800 so it must be in there somewhere. That page shows you how to find SMARTGART and use it for both versions of ATI drivers: the Catalyst Control Center, and the older control panel. Just follow the directions and try slowing your AGP speed down to 4X or to off. The AGP speed is the most likely the cause of your problem.
The problem you have running Prime95 shows that your CPU isn't completely stable and that's also something which needs to be fixed but I'd try slowing down your AGP speed first. Your CPU is only a little bit flakey and probably isn't causing your crashes in games. It may be your power supply causing the problems because they can cause crashes like you're seeing. Your power supply may or may not be able to handle the load you're putting on it but I'd try the software fixes first before replacing the power supply. |

ok, i was reading ATI's website and i found this
ATI recommends Windows XP Service Pack 2 or higher to be installed. I have Service pack 1 , so this means the error might be in that problem. I have service pack 2 im going to install that see how it works. |

The kind of RAM supported by your motherboard is completely independent of the kind of RAM supported by your video card. You just have to get the kind of RAM supported by your motherboard and don't worry about the video card. If your motherboard supports DDR RAM then you get DDR. If your motherboard supports DDR2 then you have to get DDR2. Just make sure to run MemTest86 for a few hours with no errors to make sure your new RAM is working properly.
