I would be extremely grateful if you have a bit more technical ability than myself and could help out with the following problem!
Basically, when I load a game such as Doom3, I get so far in to the game (not very far) and it cuts out and returns to Windows. It doesn't appear to cut out at any key moment, it just randomly happens without warning. The same has happened previously when I've tried to run a DVD - I have no idea what to do... I have the following system specs: MAXX PC Model: MAXX 4DV ATHLON 64 4000+ Processor: Athlon 64 4000+ Motherboard: Asus A8N-SLI - Socket 939 RAM (Memory): 2048 MB DDRDual Channel 800MHz Graphics: XFX GeForce 6800GT PCI-E 256 MB Sound Card: Sound Blaster Audigy 2 (7.1 output) Hard Disk: Seagate 250 GB Operating System: Windows XP Pro (SP2 Edition) Once again, many thanks in advance if you have any suggestions for what I could do. David. |

Do you get an error message when this happens ?
Anything in the WinXP Event log at the time it happens ? Are all your drivers updated (especially chipset, video card etc) ? About the game (Doom3) - does it cut out in the loading process or when you are actually playing it ? Try running memtest86 (dl link in my signature) for at least 10 loops or more and see if it reports any errors.

Hi Sarkast, many thanks for your message.
I get no error message when the game cuts out and the drivers for all hardware is up-to-date. I have progressed past the load screen and have played the game, but it cuts out to the Windows screen at different points of the first level, every time I play it (either in-game or during a cut-scene). There appears to be different versions of Memtest, what exactly does it do, and which one would you recommend I download? Also, where would I find the WinXP Event log? Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, David. |

OK the Event Log is under Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. Look under System or Application for an Error that happens at the same time as the crash.
Depending on if your PC has a floppy drive or not i'd suggest getting the 3.2 boot disk version. The link for it is called: "Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.2 installable from Windows and DOS. What you do is download the file - follow the instructions (scroll down on the page after you clicked on the link to the 3.2 Release) on how to create a boot disk (Windows "installation") and then boot with it like you would with an old DOS boot disk. The program runs automatically after that. If you dont have a floppy drive then download the CD ISO file - burn it on a CD and boot with it.
